Mega Airless Unveils Ultra-mini Nano Dispenser Family

Anticipating the continued growth of innovative, brand-building mini-product programs, Mega Airless has announced the debut of its all-new family of ultra-mini, top-fill solutions, packed with high-performance features – the Nano.

Mega Airless, the world’s largest, all-airless dispensing solutions company, introduced its Nano family at Cosmopack last week.

“Our Nano family is an ideal new choice for sampling, cross-promotional product sets, on-the-go products, and cosmetic applications where pinpoint precision of application is a must – such as for eyes and lips – and for one-day-cure type dermatological products,” said Eric Desmaris, Mega Airless’ director of business development.

“Our customer can now get the performance, precision and protection of Mega Airless’ patented airless, all-plastic design, in an ultra-mini size,” he said.

Available in 5, 10 and 15-ml volumes (0.2-ml dosage), each 22.5-mm diameter Nano is designed for easy filling on high-speed lines. 

According to Desmaris, the accelerated pace of new product introductions and flankers challenges today’s brand management to create new mini-product programs that amplify the impact of launches and to help stay connected to consumers in meaningful and exciting ways. 

“Mini-products are no longer just ‘freebies,’” Desmaris said.  “Today’s mini-dispenser, such as our new Nano, is a full-featured solution that effectively acts as a brand ambassador that opens access to the retail sized product. 

“And, with our technological capability as the pioneer in airless packaging, the Nano is a high-tech dispenser that perfectly emulates the end-user experience of the full-sized retail product.  Further, the Nano is completely customizable, with a variety of colors and decorative techniques that enhance perceived value,” he said. 

These decoration techniques include silk-screening, labeling and hot-stamping.

As a result, today’s mini-products can be profitably used in a variety of marketing plans, such as “gift with purchase,” in travel combination kits, and in double-offerings that combine a full-sized retail product with a “take anywhere” size.  “Strategically designed mini-product programs,” Desmaris said, “build launch awareness and, for existing products, help brands stay connected with their customers.”

FiberMark Named Exclusive Sponsor for Notable Design Competition

Toray Opens New Czech Plant for Additional Waterless Plate Production

Toray International America Inc., the premier supplier of Toray printing plates for the North and South American markets, has started its supply of Toray waterless printing plates produced at its new manufacturing facility at Toray Textiles Central Europe (TTCE) in Prostejov, Czech Republic. The new 60,000 sq ft facility, located outside the country’s capital of Prague, will be manufacturing Toray’s LL-7 commercial sized waterless plates for European, North American and South American customers, with VG-5 waterless plates to follow. 

“We’re excited to have this new centrally-located facility in Europe,” says Eric Friedman, North American sales manager of Toray International America. “After some 30 years of plate production in Okazaki, Japan, Toray plates will now also be supplied from the heart of Europe. This new modern plant has begun to ship our new LL-7 CTP waterless plates this past March 2014 for North American and South American customers.  It will provide us with a second facility to expand our plate production for worldwide consumption and increase our speed-to-market for our rising demand. The new TTCE production is equal to our factory in Japan and allows us to double our production capacity. Our new plant in Prostějov is essential if we are to satisfy rising demand and enable further growth over the coming years.”

Continuous growth and the rising sales of printing plates have prompted Toray to significantly expand its production capacities for waterless printing plates by adding this new plate line. “Since 2005, sales and turnover for waterless printing plates have increased fivefold,” says Mitsunori Hayashi, general manager for sales in the graphic materials department at TTCE. “We are seeing annual percentage growth in many areas including newspaper printing due to the success of the KBA Cortina press, of which 20 systems are now in operation or have been ordered, and security printing. While traditional offset printing is slowing down for conventional printed products, we are noticing growing demand for high-quality and special applications. Waterless offset allows trickier materials like plastics, metal and even wood veneers to be printed to a high standard of quality. Waterless offset with UV inks is also an increasingly attractive option for packaging applications.”

To respond to this growth, Toray, in 2010, began to seriously consider the possibility of building a new production line. Prostějov was chosen due to its geographical location in the heart of Europe and is ideal from a logistical standpoint.   

“The new Toray factory in Prostějov should make the printing industry take notice,” says Friedman. “In times when people are only worrying about margins, consolidation and a drop in production, with the corresponding impact on investment behaviour, Toray is significantly expanding production and sending the market an important signal. The print business is not dead – in fact, waterless offset printing is opening up some very interesting growth prospects. Many people in the industry still haven’t grasped the fact that it isn’t the cheapest that will survive, but the most innovative!”

The Toray factory in Prostějov was built in 1997 and was originally designed for the production of synthetic textiles for apparel applications. Today it is also an important site for the manufacture of air bag fabrics for the auto industry. In 2007, the favourable geographical location of the factory prompted Toray to ship the Japanese-made ‘blanks’ for offset plates to the Czech Republic, where they were finished for delivery to the end customer. Toray has now invested another €50 million in the site to construct the coating line for waterless printing plates and has shown its additional dedication and devotion to waterless printing.

Spring Arrival in Southern California for New KBA Rapida 105 Eight-Color 41-inch Press at K-1 Packaging Group

KBA North America announces that K-1 Packaging Group, a designer and manufacturer of high-end, graphic packaging materials for retail items located in City of Industry, CA, is anticipating the arrival of its new Rapida 105 41-inch eight-color press with coater and UV capabilities this spring. Due to extraordinary growth and the need for added capacity, the new KBA Rapida 105 will join two existing KBA Rapida 105 presses on its pressroom floor.

“To keep up with our dramatic sales growth, increase our capacity, and have the latest in offset printing technology, we made the decision to purchase a new KBA Rapida 105 press,” says Mike Tsai, president of K-1 Packaging Group. “While there are many new features that come with the press, the technology that we look forward to the most is the KBA QualiTronic ColorControl system. This is an inline color measurement and control camera system that monitors and maintains color consistency by taking a snapshot of every printed sheet. We intend to direct the most color critical jobs to the new press where the QualiTronic ColorControl could really help us to monitor and maintain color consistency.”

K-1 specifically configured its new KBA press based entirely on the type of work it encounters on a regular basis and its customer’s needs. UV capabilities were added to offer K-1 the most flexibility in terms of the wide range substrates in which it can print on. Says Tsai, “Most customers do not know what UV printing is; however, the kind of result they seek frequently requires UV printing. The addition of this new press will certainly facilitate our effort to grow market share. We plan to aggressively target the kind of work that the press is most capable of producing–high-end carton work.”

The purchase and installation of its new KBA press represents only a portion of a larger investment plan for K-1, which includes upgrades to its facility as well as additional equipment. Last winter, K-1 began preparation on its facility before the scheduled arrival date of the new press. To accommodate the new press the company had to reposition many pieces of existing equipment. “The new press is scheduled to become operational as we ramp up for our busy season which typically starts in May,” says Tsai. “The addition of this third press will increase the output of our pressroom. This means that processes upstream and downstream of the pressroom will also need to increase its respective output. As a result, new equipment is being added in these areas as well. We look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our throughput, as well as on our quality efforts.”

When considering a new press for its facility, K-1 and its management team did not look any further than KBA for new equipment. Tsai explains that his firm has had a very positive experience with the reliability and performance of its two existing KBA presses. “We have been working with KBA for over ten years now. Our overall experience with our KBA presses as well as with KBA’s technical support has been positive. In our overall consideration of technology and reliability, we feel that KBA makes the best sheetfed presses,” he adds.

SoOPak, a new short-run offset printing North American packaging specialist, lured crowds of interested attendees at the SIAL Canada 2014 show held at the Palais des congrès de Montréal from April 2-4. FiberMark Announces 21st Specifier Awards Call for Entries

The FiberMark Specifier Awards program was inaugurated in 1992, to celebrate the best of color, texture, pattern and design innovation across a wide array of packaging, publishing, office, graphic arts, industrial applications and—new last year—environmentally responsible print media.  Since its introduction, it has become international in scope, earning an increasing reputation as one of the most prestigious competitions in the industry.

Additionally, to be eligible for submission, projects must have been produced during the previous year. Entries are judged by a peer review committee on such criteria as design, construction quality, decoration/printing quality and relationship of the materials to the project.

This year’s design competition is themed ‘Show Us Your Genius’.  Criteria the judges will focus on include the unexpected use of color, texture, pattern, and design; hard-working use of materials; use of several different materials in one project; high-profile use of materials; and on-trend use of materials. Winners in several different categories of the competition receive wide acknowledgement of their design, including inclusion in a beautifully designed Specifier Awards booklet that is distributed to thousands of industry professionals.  Award winners are also featured in a dedicated section of the FiberMark website called ‘Design Showcase’.
