Successful Interpack: PrintCity Alliance Very Pleased with the Outcome

Members and partners of the PrintCity Alliance presented their products and solutions on a joint stand for the first time at Interpack. All the participating companies were extremely satisfied with the reaction from visitors.

Great response to the Value Added Packaging initiative
The subject of Value Added Packaging is proving to be an absolutely hot topic for the packaging industry. New, creative ideas regarding the design of packagings, and their economical realization, are increasingly important factors for success at the point of sale.

Many of these new options were illustrated on the basis of a jointly developed and produced packaging for luxury drinks. To this end, the virtual El Drago brand was realized in two versions of a folding carton with high-end finishing.

“Each company contributes an important part to a packaging of this kind. But only when all the individual parts are combined do they develop their full impact,” explains Rainer Kuhn, managing director of the PrintCity Alliance.

Consequently, the joint exhibition stand attracted great interest with its presentation of the production and finishing of packagings along the entire value chain.

The Alliance was particularly pleased about the extremely high quality of the visitors. Many new contacts were made with brand owners, agencies, printers and manufacturers from all over the world. “The visitor list is like a Who’s Who of the industry,” says a delighted Arno Dürr, sales manager at WEILBURGER Graphics, speaking on behalf of the members of the Alliance.

Connection of Competence
The members and partners of the PrintCity Alliance taking part at Interpack presented a very wide range of exhibits for packaging production, covering everything from new finishing technologies (high-quality substrates, hot and cold foil stamping applications, holograms, effect and protective coatings and pigments), smart packaging and efficient production technologies, all the way to digital printing.

The following companies participated:
Gallus (inline printing and finishing systems), LEONHARD KURZ (hot and cold foil stamping applications, holograms), Merck (effect pigments), Canon / Océ (digital printing system for packaging printing), Sappi Fine Paper Europe (special papers and board), WEILBURGER Graphics (water-based flexo inks and finishing coatings)

Wisconsin Menasha Packaging Facilities Recognized by British Retail Consortium Global Standards Again

For the second consecutive year, three Wisconsin-based Menasha Packaging facilities have been recognized by British Retail Consortium (BRC) Global Standards, a leading global safety and quality certification program.

Menasha Packaging plants in Neenah and Hartford, Wisconsin once again achieved “A” grade certifications for the BRC Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials. The company’s Midwest Fulfillment Center, also located in Neenah, was awarded a BRC Global Standard Certificate for Storage and Distribution.

The BRC Global Standards are highly regarded and widely used by suppliers and retailers worldwide since they aid in standardizing quality, safety, operational criteria and manufacturers’ fulfillment of legal obligations. Its Packaging and Packaging Materials standard is also a Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) recognized scheme.

BRC Global Standard audits are currently underway or in the works at additional Menasha Packaging facilities around the country.

The Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP) Awards Clear Lam Packaging, Inc., 2014 AmeriStar Award for Fisher Roasted Party Peanuts PrimaPak Package

Clear Lam Packaging, Inc., has won a 2014 AmeriStar Award for its Fisher Roasted Party Peanuts PrimaPak package from the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IOPP), the second major award for this new patented technology. Developed by Clear Lam to replace bulky rigid jars, blow-molded containers, injection-molded packages, composite cans and dysfunctional stand-up pouches, the PrimaPak package is the industry’s first-ever flexible, stackable and reclosable packaging produced on a vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machine. Clear Lam received the award at a ceremony held June 10 in New York City.

“We believe this packaging solution is a game-changer for the industry. Not only does it address current environmental concerns, it delivers significant cost savings to processors and manufacturers,” said James Sanfilippo, president and CEO of Clear Lam Packaging, Inc. “This recognition by a panel of our peers validates the advances made in our manufacturing practices and the hard work our entire Clear Lam team has undertaken to make our PrimaPak package commercially successful.”

One of North America’s most important packaging award competitions, the AmeriStar Award recognizes packaging innovation across a range of consumer packaged goods, pharmaceutical and industrial categories. Entries were evaluated by a panel of judges based on innovation, product protection, economics, package performance, marketing and environmental impact.

Recognized in the Shelf Stable Food Category, the award winning PrimaPak package is produced from lightweight laminated rollstock incorporating the Prima ExoShell and Clear Lam’s Peel and ReSeal Lidding system. Combining all components of the finished rollstock into one roll of film eliminates the need for pre-formed bases, lids, labels and shrink bands, reducing direct materials costs and packaging waste. The finished package resembles a pop-up box and is stackable, improving package cube by 30 percent or more. This translates into truckload and warehouse space savings, reducing fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

IoPP’s AmeriStar Packaging Awards competition commemorates the best packages of the year and pays tribute to the industry thought leaders advancing their company’s goals of packaging innovation, differentiation, savings and growth.

For nearly a decade, Clear Lam has invested extensively in research and development through its Project EarthClear initiative to commercialize new packaging technologies that minimize the impact on the environment. These efforts include packaging materials made from renewable plastics, materials that incorporate recycled content and lightweighting technologies designed to reduce weight and enhance cubing.

Schawk’s ‘Packaging E-content’ Helps Brands Control the Digital Shelf

Schawk!, a leading global brand deployment company that produces and protects brand assets to drive brand profitability, announced today that its packaging e-content for the digital shelf solution can help brands ensure control of the digital shelf.

To gain brand share of a rapidly expanding e-commerce market, marketers need to provide customers with an experience online that’s as true as possible to the product they choose at the store shelf. A brand can and should look as flawless on the digital shelf as it does on the physical shelf.

“Schawk is uniquely positioned to provide packaging e-content imagery and digital brand content that meets the accuracy and timing needs of brand owners,” stated Matt Bennett, senior vice president, growth strategies, product development & innovation, at SGK. “The digital package can be elevated to the same high standard by creating images directly from the final, approved master artwork file for the physical package – including complete views of all required informational elements.”

Bennett continued: “Only in this way can brands ensure the product as it appears on the digital shelf is never preliminary, incomplete, variable or untrustworthy. Without control of the process you do not deliver value or reap the benefits of speed, cost, efficiency, quality and regulatory compliance. Control the process and you will control the benefits.”

Schawk’s packaging e-content service is a global, scalable solution for brands seeking highly efficient and accurate production of digital brand assets for the digital shelf. Asserting control of the brand requires that brand owners gain control of the process of e-content development and e-content management. An inconsistent digital presentation of packaging can erode trust and brand equity – exactly what brands spend millions seeking to build.

Schawk can help brands gain control of the digital shelf and create a consistent brand experience for consumers at both points of purchase – on the digital shelf and on the physical shelf. The ability of marketers to drive brand profitability requires delivering a consistent brand experience. Delivering a consistent brand experience, including accurate product information that complies with governmental regulations, across shelves online and in-store can be challenging.

Schawk’s packaging e-content streamlines the packaging e-content supply chain – eliminating duplication of effort, reducing vendor-management burdens, centralizing asset control and saving money. And it takes brands to the digital market faster, with e-commerce images of packaging that look as great online as they do on the physical shelf.

“By bundling prepress artwork and e-content creation together, you’re always certain that both of them are getting done, and that both of them match each other,” said Bruce Miller, vice president, product development, at SGK. “‘Getting to market’ on time is critical of course, but the best deployment processes will deliver far beyond that. They will protect a brand’s equities and the way it’s presented in all marketing mediums around the world.”

Miller concluded: “If brands are truly successful in creating a singular brand experience, the online experience must mirror the offline experience. The online shelf can no longer be relegated to second place status. The opportunities are substantial for brands that take control of their presence on the digital shelf – now, not later.”
