Zenify stress relief drink launches in first Rexam 12 oz. SLEEK® can with tactile printing

“Live Stress Free.” That’s the mantra of Zenify, the 100 percent natural stress relief drink. Looking for a truly distinctive package that would exemplify the look and feel of its brand, the company chose to launch in the first Rexam 12oz. SLEEK® can in the U.S. to utilize tactile printing technology.

Zenify is a clean and extremely refreshing stress relief drink.  It contains 25 times more stress-relieving antioxidants than green tea, but without the caffeine. The drink’s blend of natural antioxidants and amino acids has been clinically shown to increase alpha waves in the brain, elevate serotonin and dopamine levels and reduce stress without drowsiness. Zenify also includes 100 percent of the recommended dietary allowance of five B-Vitamins, which are designed to work synergistically in the beverage to reduce stress.

Aluminum cans are infinitely recyclable with cans able to be melted, converted to cans again and back on retail shelves within 60 days. In the last 15 years, the beverage can industry has reduced the overall carbon footprint of the aluminum can by more than 45 percent. These facts help make cans the most recycled beverage container in the world with a U.S. recycling rate of 65.1 percent, more than double the rate of other beverage packages.

As consumers continue to demand real ingredients in their beverages and seek out all-natural and lower sugar soda options, DRY Soda is making its unique sodas more accessible to customers by offering it in Rexam 12-oz. SLEEK cans. DRY Soda also introduces two new flavors this summer: Apple DRY and Ginger DRY.

DRY Soda’s launch of sleek cans and introduction of new flavors means that DRY customers can enjoy DRY in more places—on the go, poolside, cocktails, lunches and entertaining at home. In addition to the Apple and Ginger, DRY will also offer three current flavors in cans: Vanilla Bean, Blood Orange, and Cucumber DRY. 

Originally introduced in 12-oz. glass bottles, DRY Soda has chosen to expand into the Rexam SLEEK can because of its durability and portability. DRY Soda also supports the use of aluminum cans as they are the most sustainable packaging choice in the world, and are recycled at more than double the rate of any other beverage package. 

In 2005, well before low sugar products were part of the national conversation, DRY Soda CEO and Founder Sharelle Klaus saw the need for a less sweet, all-natural soda and created the first soda line with significantly less sugar and made with just four ingredients. DRY, the better for you soda, contains one-quarter to one-third of the sugar and calories of traditional sodas, and is only 45-70 calories per 12-oz. bottle/can.

Wine Cans from Ball Packaging Europe Hit UK Shelves with Wild Pelican

Wild Pelican takes off on the UK market with a white wine and a red wine in special wine cans. The 20 cl (content 18.7 cl) slim format aluminum cans featuring an elegant matt finish are made by Ball Packaging Europe, one of Europe’s leading beverage can makers.

Wild Pelican chose wine cans from Ball Packaging Europe to protect the premium taste of its wines. In a can, neither light nor oxygen nor cork can compromise the quality of wine.

Both the white and the red wine are generally available from retailers. The wines are packaged in slim format 20 cl aluminum cans produced by Ball Packaging Europe for premium wines. The Protected Quality seal guarantees high quality and underscores the premium character of the Wild Pelican products. Matt lacquer lends the cans an elegant finish. The color-coordinated tab makes for a design highlight.

Wild Pelican’s carefully selected high-quality wines come from wine growing regions the world over. For the red wine, Wild Pelican has opted for the tempranillo grape from northern Spain. SanTan Brewing’s Mr. Pineapple Wheat Ale Debuts in Rexam 12oz. Cans

Just in time for summer camping trips and cookouts, SanTan Brewing Company’s award-winning summer seasonal Mr. Pineapple Wheat Ale is back and available now in 12oz. Rexam cans. 

Winner of a silver medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Festival competition, Mr. Pineapple is a refreshing and fruity traditional German Wheat ale with natural pineapple juice added. It was originally developed as a signature brew for SanTan Brewing Company’s annual Luau celebration during the summer months in Arizona. Mr. Pineapple has a hazy straw gold color and is 5% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Ampac Wins Two Flexible Packaging Association Awards

Ampac, the world’s leader in creative packaging solutions, has won two Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) awards – Gold in Environmental & Sustainability Achievement for its Savvy Green No.2 Pouch, and Silver in Packaging Excellence for Campbell’s Skillet Sauces.

Ampac’s No.2 Pouch has been commercialized in several new applications including a first of its kind in the laundry category for Savvy Green Eco-Clean Laundry Detergent. The No 2 Pouch is manufactured using a proprietary coextruded HPDE blend, allowing it to be recycled with other HDPE products in municipalities with recycling programs, as well as at retail stores with drop off locations for clean and dry HDPE shopping bags. The Ampac No 2 Pouch has been improved for stiffness to help it stand upright in retail and in the home, and has improved drop resistance for heavy products.

Utilizing a coextruded film as an alternative to the more traditional lamination process, the Savvy Green No.2 Pouch eliminates the energy, materials, and associated waste from the lamination process.  In addition, all trim, and rejected film/pouches accumulated during the manufacturing process of the No. 2 Pouch are recycled into resin which is used in manufacturing can liners for other Ampac customers. The No.2 Pouch participates in the HOW2RECYCLE program which provides consumers with a path to recycling flexible packaging. The Savvy Green pouch meets the No.2 SPI ASTM classification (D-7611/D7611M-10) and is approved through Trex, the largest plastic bag recycler in the U.S.

Ampac won a Silver FPA award in the Packaging Excellence category for its Campbell’s Skillet Sauces pouch. The new Campbell’s Skillet Sauces line uses a new format – shaped stand up pouch – in a category that is traditionally packaged in glass jars or aluminum cans. The Campbell’s Skillet Sauces pouch is a rotogravure printed retort 4-ply foil lamination in a stand-up pouch which is rotogravure printed utilizing a pattern matte varnish to highlight the graphics. Coupled with the shaped, non-rocking bottom, this creates enhanced shelf appeal. This package includes a layer of linear tear film that gives the consumer the best opening experience possible, and a clear gusset to give the consumer a window to see the product while in the package.

Visually, the Campbell’s Skillet Sauces pouch has a registered patterned matte varnish that is utilized to highlight the product pictures and cooking instructions which are glossy. This package is 7-color rotogravure reverse print with a one color surface printed registered varnish. The matte varnish is used to highlight the product and creates a package with maximum shelf appeal – a process that is unique for retort pouches.

Young Packaging – Adult Taste

HAINDL´S Bitter Lemon, Ginger Ale and Tonic Water are now available in practical 33 cl (11-oz.) aluminum cans from Ball Packaging Europe. Distributor Rhodius Mineralquellen und Getränke GmbH & Co. KG has thus added a modern alternative to the range of containers associated with this famous carbonated bitters brand.

All HAINDL´S cans are adorned with a QR (Quick Response) code which customers can scan using their smartphone camera in order to retrieve HAINDL’S web page. This provides extensive product information, including tempting cocktail suggestions for the company’s Ginger Ale, Tonic Water and Bitter Lemon – refreshing carbonated bitters traditionally used as mixers in long drinks such as vodka and lemon or gin and tonic.

Modern beverage cans offer attractive added value for the consumer – and in adopting this packaging option, RHODIUS is deliberately addressing a young, active, urban audience. It’s a demographic that shows a particular preference for these light yet resilient containers – not just for enjoyment on-the-go but also for their sustainability credentials. For the can is infinitely recyclable without any loss of material quality. Both aluminum and steel retain their integrity even after multiple remelts, enabling them to be reused without degradation. In Germany, 96% of all beverage cans are recycled, with obvious positive effects on the energy balance: Recovering beverage cans of aluminum or steel as a starting material saves up to 95% of the energy required for producing the new metals, with CO­2 emission levels also being reduced by up to 91%.

Coors packaging touts rewards of recycling

Coors Recyclebank canCoors Brewing Co., inventor of the first 100 percent recyclable aluminum can, today kicked off its latest sustainability initiative by announcing a partnership with Recyclebank, the company that rewards people for taking every day green actions with discounts and deals. The program, Coors Recycles, will support the Recyclebank mission to promote environmentally conscious waste disposal through a monetary contribution and special packaging.

 

A portion of select Coors Light and Coors Banquet packages sold now through March 31, 2013, helps fund a contribution of up to $250,000 from Coors Recycles to Recyclebank. Recyclebank is using these funds, in part, to build a national online campaign to educate consumers about the benefits of aluminum recycling and reward them for their engagement. Purchasers should look for the Coors Recycles logo and messaging on specially-marked packages to participate.

 

“We’re proud that Coors Brewing Company invented the first 100 percent recyclable all-aluminum can in 1959,” said Pete Coors, MillerCoors chairman of the board. “The Coors Recycles program aims to remind legal-drinking-age consumers of the importance of recycling their beer cans, and through Recyclebank, offers them a refreshing way to get involved in a greener lifestyle at varying levels.”

 

Today, 152 million aluminum cans are recycled each day, making them the most recycled item in the United States.

Understanding Recycling and Waste Management

While waste management is collecting, transporting, processing, monitoring, recycling, or disposing of such products.

Recycling and waste management is a method of processing waste. In recycling, the materials that have become waste are made into new products because they may still be potentially useful. By doing this, raw materials are better preserved and it lessens their consumption. Recycling also reduces air pollution, water pollution, and conserves energy.

Once recyclable materials are collected, they are transported to a collection facility by waste management. Here, different wastes (like glass, paper, and plastic) are separated and sorted. Some of the separation and sorting is done by machines, such as the handling of metal, but things like cardboard and glass are sorted by hand.

Waste management is conducted to recover resources. Many substances are handled in waste management, such as radioactive, solid, gaseous, and liquid substances. Solid substances are the type in waste management that is recyclable. This process is conducted in residential, urban, and rural areas. A common example of it is taking out the trash each week and having it picked up by a truck. Although, only non-hazardous waste can be picked up curbside and potentially hazardous materials must be handled differently.

In waste management, the most commonly recycled items are aluminum cans (typically the beverage can variety). Second are wires, steel, aerosol cans, jars, bottles, cartons, magazines, paper, boxes, and newspapers. Items made out of other materials, such as PVC, are also recycled under waste management.

Recycling and waste management are correlated because they are both components in reducing waste and recycling is a part of the waste hierarchy. Materials suitable to be recycled include paper, textiles, glass, electronics, plastic, and metal. In order to recycle such materials, waste management must be implemented. This is because those items need to be processed by either having them picked up from a curbside or by taking them to a collection center. Once the materials have been removed, they will be sorted, cleaned, and finally reprocessed (meaning they are ready to be used in new products).

In regard to curbside collection, which is most commonly used, recyclable materials and non-recyclable materials must be separated. For instance, things like plastic, paper, and glass all go into one container while non-recyclable trash goes into another. This is done so waste management can sort each thing more effectively. Typically, there are two trucks that operate for curbside collection. One only picks up recyclables and the other only picks up non-recyclables.

Recycling and waste management is closely correlated. Basically, one cannot exist without the other because it is a dependent relationship that functions effectively together.                        Almost every product we buy most of the food we eat and many of the liquids we drink come encased in plastic packaging, which provides excellent protection for the product. It is cheap to manufacture and seems to last forever. Lasting forever, however, is proving to be a major environmental problem. Plastics are manufactured from numerous non-renewable resources like natural gas, coal, and oil. Plastics cannot be degraded easily in the natural environment due to their long polymer molecules which are too large and too tightly bound.                                                              

                      A type of sturdy and hard plastic is made with a molecule known as Bisphenol A, BPA. BPA like many other man made chemicals is now detectable in most people’s blood streams and could cause dangerous hormonal changes in children. BPA may tend to cause cancer, early puberty, obesity and even attention deficit disorder.

                     To overcome this problem BIODEGRADABLE PLASTICS have been developed which are made from renewable resources, such as plants. Biodegradable plastics are made with plant-based materials and result in 15% less carbon emission. Infact biodegradable plastics have not been successful in replacing the wide spread use of traditional petrochemical plastics.

    The following are few items and the time required for their decomposition,

     Tin cans- 50 to 100 years

    Aluminum Cans- 80 to 100 years

    Glass Bottles- 1 million years

    Newspapers- 25 to 50 years

     Polystyrene- 1000’s of years

    Plastic bags- 400 years

    So now we know the raising alarm being caused in the environment by the use of plastics. But a solution is always there,

                    The plastics that are decomposed in the natural environment are known as the “biodegradable plastics”. (‘Biodegradable’ means that a substance can naturally decompose with the help of micro organisms and will not persist in the environment beyond a certain period of time). The chemical bonds of biodegradable compounds are easily destroyed by a variety of bacteria over a small period of time to facilitate their decomposition. As early as in the year 1926, Lemoigne managed to isolate the first of the polyhydroxyalkanoates – polyhydroxybutyrate (a homopolymer whose building unit is the 3-hydroxybutyric acid) from the Bacillus megaterium bacterium. At the end of the 1950s, the presence of the polyhydroxybutyrate was confirmed as an energy and carbon source and storage in many other bacteria. Many species of bacteria accumulate polyhydroxyalkonoates as energy storage compounds, some of the PHA polymers are commercially valuable as biodegradable plastics.

                     Polyhyroxybutyrate is a PHA produced in Ralstonia eutropha via three enzyme bio synthetic pathway consisting of ? – ketothiolase, aceto acetyl Co-A reductase, and PHB synthase. PHB synthase production in plants was first demonstrated in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana. Polyhydroxy alkanoates (PHAs), e.g., polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), are synthesized from acetyl-CoA used as precursor, and are used for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics with thermoplastic properties. At present, PHAs are produced by bacterial fermentation, and the cost of biodegradable plastic is substantially higher than that of synthetic plastics.

                      Attempts are being made to produce PHAs in transgenic plants to reduce the cost. Genes encoding the two enzymes, aceto-acetyl-CoA reductase (PhbB) and PHB synthase (phbC), involved in the PHB synthesis from the precursor acetyl-CoA have been transferred from the bacterium Alcaligenes eutrophus and expressed in Arabidopsis thaliana. When the two enzymes were targeted into the plastids, PHB accumulated in leaves. PHB production by transgenic plants provides an example of a novel compound synthesized in plants.

     Standards that certify biodegradability and compostability,

     Following international organizations have established standards and testing methods for compostability: American Society for Testing and Materials ASTM ASTM 6400-99

     European Standardization Committee (CEN) EN13432

    International Standards Organization (ISO) ISO14855 (only for biodegradation)

    German Institute for Standardization (DIN) DIN V49000

                    The ASTM, CEN and DIN standards specify the criteria for biodegradation, disintegration and eco-toxicity for a plastic to be called compostable. While ISO 14855 makes no stipulations regarding disintegrations or toxins remaining.

                    Dealing with plastic wastes has taken on significance not far short of ultimate redemption. Developing biodegradable plastics is just one of the solutions to the existing problem. Its our responsibility to remember that by the uncontrolled use of plastics we are contributing our share to a deadly pollution whose ill effects are irreversible and capable of reaching out to numerous generation to come.

We created a facebook group and set up a station on campus where people could plant seeds in soil and take home a free plastic water bottle plant pot! We want people to take pictures of their flowers and upload them to the facebook group!

    I have recently relocated to the city of Knoxville, Tennessee and have been pleasantly startled by the extent of the consideration towards environmental friendliness the city has as a whole. Everywhere I look this is evidenced – just the other day I was driving and noticed a message stating “This vehicle operates on clean biofuel” on the back of a city bus. To see an entire city displaying such environmental awareness and dedication to sustainability is definitely encouraging!

    More and more, this is becoming the norm for cities. As their inhabitants are educating themselves on the need to preserve our environment and treat it with care, they come to expect and often demand that the city they live in take steps to do. In the case of Knoxville, trees are planted, biofuels and other clean energy sources are used, public transportation is accessible and convenient, and most of all recycling programs are implemented. This isn’t just exclusive to Knoxville, either. Dozens of cities now offer curbside pickup, and failing that there is still almost always some form of dedicated recycling center in place.

    Recycling as a Lifestyle
    As the scale of the institutions that are now backing eco-friendly living continues to increase, it is becoming increasingly realistic for everyday people to reprioritize and reorganize their lives to do the same. This does not have to be a major upheaval, as simple things like recycling can be the first major steps taken to great benefit, and without the need for inconvenient or uncomfortable changes. Consider what is necessary for recycling:

    – You purchase the same products you always purchase, or if you’re ambitious take a little extra time to notice the type of packaging products come in and opt for those that are able to be recycled.

    – When it’s time to discard plastic bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard, newspapers and other things, instead you set them aside in bags or boxes tucked away underneath sinks, inside closets or out of the way in the garage.

    – If your city offers curbside pickup of recyclable goods then you simply place the bagged recyclables outside with the rest of your trash. If not, then you set aside about an hour (give or take) once a month to bring your collected materials to your local recycling center.

    Considerations for Recycling
    Prior to beginning to collect and separate your recyclables, it is wise to take some time to research the kinds of materials your city’s recycling program can accept. Not all cities are equipped to deal with every kind of material which is able to be recycled. For example, in Clearwater, Florida where I used to live they simply stopped taking glass products altogether. Before you spend extra time washing and storing all these items, check around on your city’s website or get in touch with local officials to find out what is accepted and what is not.

    Some cities have independent recycling centers that will still pay you for bringing in certain recyclable goods. The city I lived in before Knoxville, New Tazewell, Tennessee has a center that pays people to bring in aluminum cans or any other kind of scrap metal, big or small.

    Recycling is of immeasurable importance as our society, and humanity as a whole, reexamines its priorities and restructures its way of life in order to coexist with the natural balance of things and live sustainable and healthy lives. Like the song says, the old road is rapidly gaining, please get out of the new one if you can’t lend your hand.
