Want Results? Avoid Beauty Contests When It Comes To Package Design

Want Results? Avoid Beauty Contests When It Comes To Package Design

Marketers will often turn to focus groups for feedback on current or proposed packaging design. Unfortunately, traditional focus groups tend to mimic beauty contests. They turn into opinion gathering sessions that support a participant’s point of view, rather than providing feedback on consumers’ actual buying behavior within the store environment where products are purchased.

Participants play art director over design issues, confuse the brand with the package design, react emotionally to price increase questions, and talk about what they “like” and “don’t like”. As a result, the output quality of this type of research is minimal at best.

On the other hand, effective behavior-based focus group research measures the effect of brand influence, analyzes the buying behavior of participants in a comparative retail environment, and uses eye-tracking technology to find out what consumers pay attention to – and what they ignore.

The significance of brand influence

Effective brand value testing involves separating the brand name from the actual proposed or current package design. This measurement gives an indication of how the brand is perceived prior to seeing a packaged product. Participants are then introduced to the packaging and asked if the new or proposed package design adds, or detracts from, perceived brand value. Marketers may be making a costly mistake if the perceived value of a brand is negatively affected by a new design architecture.

Buying behavior of participants in a retail environment

Packaging design is measured and tested in the comparative marketplace for which it is intended. A comparative marketplace is one in which the competition sits side by side for comparison and consideration. This is a circumstance that does not usually occur in print and broadcast media; as competitors usually do not jockey to be side-by-side.

According to Wharton School research, over one third of the brands displayed on the shelf are never seen. A colorful and exciting new design that is approved in the boardroom or chosen in a focus group may fail if all the other packages on the shelf in the same category are equally as colorful and exciting. Contrast is what makes a package design stand out on the shelf, and this can be achieved through the effective means of both design and structural innovation.

Eye-tracking technology

Consumers spend 2-3 seconds scanning a package for relevant information. If they do not immediately comprehend the benefit they will move on to a competitor’s brand. It is imperative to know what consumers are seeing and what they are not, and this can be done effectively with eye-tracking technology. This type of research gives marketers an idea of which messaging to prioritize, and which information to minimize.

Not surprisingly, the more text there is on a package, the less it will be read. Unfortunately, many well-meaning marketers think the opposite, and act accordingly. Some of the product designers at Microsoft have put together a great parody of this practice by showing how the Microsoft marketing department would redesign Apple’s iPod package. Instead of the simple and elegant messaging Apple created, it becomes a hodgepodge of system requirements, badges, call-outs, sub-branding logos, benefit statements, feature lists, and more!

Effective behavior-based focus group research goes beyond “opinion gathering”, giving researchers the feedback necessary to understand the impact and value of both present, and proposed packaging design in real-world terms.

LifeCell – Products to Enhance Your Beauty

LifeCell – Products to Enhance Your Beauty

It is an inevitable part of getting older, there are going to eventually be the faint touches of those crows feet, the gradual loss of firmness and elasticity, the loss of lip plumpness, and the worst of them all, the dark circled and puffy eyes. No matter how hard that we try to keep skin aging at bay, but they have always said that no one could hold on to youth forever! At least this has always been true until the magical wonders of plastic surgery and Botox came along.

But when it came to actually going under the knives and needles for officially correcting all of the age bringing flaws that come about, so many of us just can’t bring ourselves to do it. For some individuals out there, they can afford to hold onto their youthfulness and beauty this way, but so many more of us just could not afford the very high costs that always come with most any kind of surgical procedures.

Besides plastic surgery being a very expensive way to fight off human age signs, it is also a dangerous, painful, time consuming way to hold on to youth. There just is no getting around the fact that most every surgery can easily go awry, and the dangers of infection, the plastic surgeon botching the procedure, or some other horrible problem arises from the surgical procedure. If you make it through the surgical proceedings without any problems, there is also the weeks of recovery that most every surgical procedure carries with it, and how many of us can truly afford to take several weeks off specifically for a beautification surgical procedure?

Then there are the vast numbers of skin care products that promise most everything in correcting those unwanted aging facial flaws, but many of these anti-wrinkle creams tend to be more hype than true facial repair. There is also the possibility that you are spending a small fortune of many of these anti-wrinkles and seeing no real results at all.

But finally the days of plastic surgery and overpriced non-working creams can be completely because there is now an anti-aging product that even a good number of plastic surgeons, and many of the Hollywood stars officially stand by! This anti-aging cream that has been proving over and over that it is your youth in a jar is the one and only cream appropriately called LifeCell! Not only will all of your facial wrinkles start to disappear in minutes, but the skin’s elasticity and glow will be renewed too!

It is said that LifeCell cream helps to stimulate the production of collagen helping lines and wrinkles look more smoothened out. Wrinkles appear pushed up and out as though plumped from within. This cream contains 24 hour moisturizer that nourishes the skin, natural collagen stimulator helping the lines to disappear, microlifter and firmer for the skin to look tighter and firmer, it reduces the appearance of discoloration and imperfections, reduces the appearance of under-eye puffiness and dark circles as well as makes the lip appear fuller with fine lines.

Philosophy Beauty Products – Where to Buy Philosophy Online

Philosophy Beauty Products – Where to Buy Philosophy Online

The Philosophy brand started with BioMedic a medical beauty product promoted by plastic surgeons and dermatologists. The company was first created by Cristina Carlino and followed the concept of creating a new line of beauty products backed by science and research. From peels to creams and rejuvenation products, Philosophy, Inc was and remains about the whole body not just a part of it.

The UK Beauty Products Sector

While the economy is taking a downward spiral statistics show that the beauty and health market in the UK is beating the retail market where spending is concerned. It is called the Lipstick theory. The fact is when the economy slows lipstick sale increase. It’s a case of mind over matter. With things falling apart in life, it is simply easier to look good and hence, feel good. The small things on the beauty products counter seem more affordable compared to the more expensive retail products.

It is not only the women who are buying; men’s toiletries take a good ten percent of the sales. As consumers continue to buy the market becomes even competitive as brands try to make their products as appealing and affordable as possible.

Philosophy Product Range

The Philosophy concept is about bringing hope in a life which is fast becoming stressful and overloaded with failures. That is why products like “Hope in a Jar” bring about a new concept. Though simply a moisturiser, the name of the product and what it represents makes it more than a cream. It is endorsed by celebrities, dermatologists and plastic surgeons. It suggests that miracles can happen and starting with our own body is the first step to change.

Facial Cleansers have names like ‘Purity’ suggesting simplicity in ingredients and also suggesting that the product is the first step in making life simpler. The concept behind the name Philosophy is carried to all its  beauty products . The names, the slogans and the advertisements used to promote the brand all cater to the lifestyle of a person rather than parts of the individual.

The Philosophy product line is simplistic in presentation. Its award winning products some of which are named above and others like “Amazing Grace” spray fragrance, and the MicroDelivery exfoliating wash all come in simple, yet beautiful, jars and bottles.
Philosophy gift sets make a really special gift for a friend or loved one, whether it’s for a birthday or Christmas present, or just to cheer someone up and let them know you care – a philosophy gift set is the perfect gift idea.

The impressing part about the Philosophy  top beauty products Range is that it started with the lifestyle of people in mind and continued that way rather than competing with the more established beauty brands like Revlon and Maybelline. It proved through its niche target marketing that it would not compromise its business mission through hard core competition and through that new concept, Philosophy makes a name for itself in a unique and unforgettable way.

Organic Abundance – Beauty With a Conscience

Organic Abundance – Beauty With a Conscience

You know how it is, you see that something is organic and you are drawn to it, it’s just a nice feeling knowing that it is real, not tampered with. Then when you use it, comes the knowledge that you’ve done something true and right ~ and goodness only knows in this day and age ~ we all need to feel that from time to time.

There is the cautionary tale of course, that the term can and is frequently used , loosely, by manufacturers and the like, to lure people into buying goods that are not in fact truly organic, but rest assured there is organic treasure out there, it’s just a case of knowing where to look.

My quest was to find skin care that happily, beautifully and reasonably~ (I had to stay in harmony with my bank manager as well as nature!)~ reduced my biological footprint on this planet, and so with a number of key questions in the blueprint, the research began.

What defines Organic? 70% organic products, which are produced under very strict guidelines, are the minimum count that you should accept. Better to seek out 95% organic content, which is then categorized as Certified Organic, and give yourself not only peace of mind, but the maximum benefits.

Is Natural the same thing? No, it really isn’t. An item can be labelled as natural, which might mean it is processed as little as possible, but can also mean it’s been heavily processed. What it does not mean is that it has been organically grown. There is no official regulation in place for use of the term ‘natural’.

Will labels confuse me? You bet they will! The whole labelling law thing needs a major overhaul ~ manufacturers only need use one organic ingredient to be able to boast that term, and then they can pop whatever else they want in there ~ often to the detriment of our precious skin. The average person uses around 9 different care products each day ~ as you step into your shower, start counting…, then sit on the end of your bed, and read those labels. It will come as no surprise now, when I reveal that you have rubbed, smoothed and slathered a potential 126 toxic chemicals into your body.

What benefits should I be looking for? Well we all want the very best for ourselves, and when you consider that our skin is the largest organ we possess, absorbing all we put on it, then it really makes sense that what we choose is as natural and nourishing as possible. Why subject our skin to harmful toxins, when Mother Nature can provide us with a pure alternative?

Does Organic really equal ‘Green’? Undoubtedly! We are all aware now of the impact and responsibility we have for our world. At last an ethical approach is permeating our consciousness, and consumer demand for organic industry is steadily rising as we realise we are part of a Global community, who need to put the Earth first.

My search for true organic products had to include issues such as sustainable agriculture, the guarantee that damage to the environment had not occurred with the poisonous chemicals used in conventional agriculture. I had to be sure that not only were the ingredients pure, the products free from synthetic preservatives, colours and fragrances but that any packaging may be recyclable or biodegradable.

After many weeks of reading, research, and dead ends, it was an unassuming handout on decorated card, included in the local school newsletter which would provide answers, solutions and the path to a cornucopia of authentic organic body care. This line of certified organics embraced the bounty of nature and was as gentle on my purse as it was on my skin! This range was so safe and pure that apparently, should the urge take you, you could eat it! My sceptical heart was stirred and I decided to investigate.

The handout had taken the form of an invite. There was a promise of an aromatic cup of (organic!) coffee, an explanation and showing of wonderful certified organic products, along with a bit of a social get together. I was ready to experience what sounded like a decidedly agreeable and comfortable method of reviewing this range. So on a sunny Saturday morning, in a pretty suburban cul de sac, I rang the bell of an unpretentious house and was warmly greeted by Stephanie. The coffee smelt great ~ and it wasn’t long before we were having a good chat about the skin care products, which were invitingly arranged on a big table, lids off, readily pokeable and slatherable! The camaraderie that comes when a few people get together with the same aim makes for such an easy atmosphere and Stephanie was a mine of information about the goodies tempting us. It was instantly apparent that these were beautiful preparations soft, genuinely natural and containing 100% organic ingredients. The claim that they were as safe as to be edible, was absolutely true, and whilst certain shampoos, lotions, and lip balms did smell good enough to eat, everyone was too busy pampering themselves to test the theory!

So far, the claims, the products and the prices were all adding up, and I had gathered a small arsenal of lotions and potions not only for myself, but for my husband and my dedicated organic seeking daughters! But I needed to find out about the company who provided the umbrella for this plethora of nature’s offerings. There were still questions that had to be asked to convince me that this was the end of my search. Hopefully Stephanie would come through for me, because I can tell you now, I was more than eager to get these babies paid for, get them home and get them working! Ten minutes, and a potted history later about a visionary company that cares for the environment and me, I was satisfied, and happily stashing my haul into the boot of my car.

With a wave and a smile Stephanie saw me off, and I drove home with my harvest, eager to share the good news with my family. I chuckled to myself at her last words, which unwittingly underscored my original criteria:- ‘Don’t forget to throw the packaging on the garden and water it ~ it’s not just bio degradable ~ it’s compostable!’ Mission Accomplished.

Beauty No Longer Skin Deep

Beauty No Longer Skin Deep

In an era that’s dominated by Greenpeace and Environmentalists, I wanted to see just how invested in our environmental leaders are in the fashion industry. I wanted to see whether it would even matter to most consumers if an apparel company used organic cotton to make its jeans. If a cosmetics company was

green, or organic? Does anyone care?

I asked more than a hundred people, in different e-mail lists and web-sites, and the answers varied more than you might think. Most people said that they didn’t tend to think about their clothing nearly as much as they might their cosmetics. Vicky from Texas said “It’s not that I don’t care, but it’s not something you see designers focusing on.” She went on to say, “some of them do, but not enough to give me good choices.” Bella from New England said “It’s just a matter of cost, if you go green it costs you more green, so you charge more green.”

People want to be beautiful, and the number of people that don’t want to only be beautiful on the outside is increasing daily. This creates a strange paradox, if I was to follow the old cliché, I would think that strong morals would mean less money for fashion. Yet you have to be financially “well to do” if you want to go green in both clothing and cosmetics. If your pocket book isn’t boiling over you might loose hope!

Here are some tips for those cheeky kids that know what they want and only need some easy ways to get started.

It runs an apparel company about 60% – 70% of their total costs to buy their material. So, if you’re a fashionesta with an eye for clothes that scream of moral certitude, look for cheap green fabric and then find out who uses it. Most green material manufacturers will have a page that tells you who uses their product.

Cosmetics on the other hand are not as easy to find…

In the US, cosmetics and skin care products aren’t regulated by any group. A company can put pretty much whatever it wants into it’s products. That’s why L’Oreal, Maybelline, and nearly all cosmetic companies based in the US have to make completely different formulations for any country that regulates what chemicals are allowed in skin care products. The formulations sold in the US contain all sorts of nasties, from harmful dyes, preservatives, and chemicals, to all sorts of animal by-products (I won’t say what, but trust me loves, it would curl your toes). A consumer looking for a green, consumer friendly cosmetics company is in for a headache I’m afraid.

Here are some places to start.

Gourmet Body Treats – This Green, Vegan, Organic, and Cruelty Free Cosmetics Company based out of Schertz, TX offers amazingly hi-end products for very reasonable prices. Their mineral cosmetics line is award winning, and they have been in business for the better part of a decade.

Dr. Bronner Soaps – Cruelty free, nor petrochemicals or synthetic ingredients. Made in the USA. They are famous for setting the standard for safe natural cosmetics. They also donate to various charities and social initiatives.

Aubrey Organics – The original natural cosmetics company started in 1969. This company has won numerous awards for its sustainability and use of natural preservatives and even cooler, they don’t codnuct any animal testing and use minimal packaging.

Now go out their and start making and Eco Fashion Statement!

Beauty Myth and the Cinderella Complex: Youth Beauty And Money – Is That All There Is?

Beauty Myth and the Cinderella Complex: Youth Beauty And Money – Is That All There Is?

She places her jaded heart in a small begging bowl and kneels before him. He dispenses his affection like loose change – amusing himself with her look of gratitude. For a fleeting moment they both pretend that an exchange of value has taken place. She remembers a time when he wanted her with passion. She remembers a time when they all did tricks for her. She remembers who she was and the power of seduction; the power of youth, a pretty face, sexuality and vitality. She dreamed dreams of all things possible. Of course the biggest dream of all echoes through her girl-child mind “I want to be a bride”. She so vividly remembers her wedding day, it was all she ever wanted and often thinks of it as her ‘princess day’.

Daddy called her Princess as he tucked her into bed at night. She believed she was his princess and never questioned his predictions of one day becoming a beautiful woman, falling madly in love and living happily ever after.

What a joke. What a great big fat lie. Was she really so deluded? Was it bad luck, bad judgment, bad choices or is the dream for only ‘the others’. It probably never occurred to her that a Princess by definition must stay young and beautiful.

Cinderella probably started it all and it was reinforced over and over in books, movies, conversations and culture.

As a child she wondered about ‘Him’ and played dress-up games with her friends. They were all called Mrs. and prepared tea for when Mr. came home. They had bride dolls and baby dolls. They imagined and designed their future wedded bliss. He, was handsome, successful, rich and romantic.

Girls were not really expected to worry too much with things like education or finance. That was unless you were a ‘Plain Jane’. No, boys don’t like girls if they are too smart anyway. Beauty is the key – beauty is everything. Beauty is your ticket into ‘happily ever after’.

Happily ever after always had me a bit baffled. Most girls seemed to be very comfortable with the story ending at happily ever after. It nagged at me a bit – well actually it worried me quite a lot. I kind of perceived it to be a little like death. It seemed to me that when you got married your story finished. If happily ever after was so wonderful then why didn’t it become another story; an even better story?

Another thing that really confused me was that as a teenager we were all very obsessed with our looks and working our magic, but something seemed very, very strange. The married women in my town were anything but examples of happily ever after. I don’t mean to be unkind, but these women really scared me. The men were neither princes nor charming.

(I wondered about the girl who kissed the frog who became the prince. A lot of warts I would expect and probably that’s not too far from reality either.)

Well I don’t know who had warts or who had what; I was just observing and wondering. I saw men who drank too much and yelled too loud. Women in thread bare dresses and grubby little kids hanging off them. Hair in plastic curlers and clothes pegs in mouths. Daytime soaps and talkback radio. I certainly knew nothing about ‘all the riches in the land’. Enough to buy fags for the week and a punt on the pony’s maybe, but no diamonds or mink coats which were the status symbols at the time.

Things have changed a little since then and women of today are at least questioning some of these issues. Thankfully, woman now are gaining education, good jobs and independent incomes. Many, are also finding they are quite capable of looking after children on their own rather than enduring abusive relationships. To hear women talk you would think that they really have analyzed and resolved their Cinderella conflicts, but have they?

Does intellect really root out those childhood expectations? Do we still believe that a woman must be beautiful to attract and keep a mate? How much of our happiness and security depends of our youth and sexuality?

Aren’t successful, intelligent, middle aged women still secretly dreaming of ‘Him’. One marriage, two marriage, three marriage, four!

Perhaps if Cindella Part 2 had ever been written we might have discovered that Cinderella did indeed live happily ever after. She might have passed through the natural stages of life with grace and charm. She may have surrendered the things of youth easily and naturally as she evolved into a complete and competent woman within her own right. Perhaps her prince’s initial lust and fascination gave way to a deeper respect, friendship and trust that formed such a bond and deep genuine love, that they did indeed live happily ever after. Isn’t it possible that her warmth, generosity, wisdom, humour and true nature were of greater value as they both evolved?

I do believe that this could be a likely scenario. I certainly appreciate the appeal of youth, beauty and sensuality, but it is not my measure of human value. These things would probably gain my attention for about ten minutes. Now, I am not going to suggest that good looking people are dumb or vacuous, although this is often very stereotypical, it’s not right either. Being good looking does not make a person stupid anymore than being plain makes someone more interesting. We also need to accept that being wealthy is not a measure of value as a human being. Money is good and can make life on many levels a little easier, but it doesn’t make all wealthy men ideal husbands nor does it mean that lacking wealth makes a man an inferior partner.

We just need to do away with all of these unrealistic expectations and judgments and define what is true for ourselves. It is certainly easy enough to just sit for a minute or two and ask yourself why you do love the people you do. I think that your list might be very similar to mine; integrity, humour, empathy, warmth, intelligence and anything that engages or connects me to that person. I really would rather be sitting with a funny, interesting fat boy at the back of the room rather than staring up at a male stripper on stage – that’s for sure.

If we are able to get clear on what we need and want then maybe we could dismantle and reconstruct our Cinderella delusion.

Now, this is where things get really interesting. Billions and billions of dollars change hands due to clever marketing tactic cashing in on our Cinderella belief. In the extreme, women can be so convinced that beauty is the only measure of self worth that they will literally destroy themselves. Do you think I’m kidding? Warm, wonderful, valuable, clever, talented people are going to take themselves right out of the game of life. They are going to do it deliberately and willingly and I will tell you why.

Brainwashing. It is so incredibly easy to do as we have already bought into the princess belief as children. Reinforcing the idea that being beautiful makes us happy or that lack of beauty makes us undesirable is the perfect marketing formula. Powerful and effective marketing requires subtle, consistent and emotionally charged interpretation. Everywhere we look we see imagery of beauty and youth attaining success, love, romance, sex, wealth, admiration, security and happiness. Not so obvious is the underlying message that without beauty, we are not worthy nor are we capable of having these things.

Men are victimized too, but their version of self worth is tied in to money, success, power and prestige. Lives are being totally destroyed by the belief in this BS! It’s not true. It’s not even logical and it’s as clear as day, but we still believe it. Not only do we believe it; we actually promote it ourselves. The effect of this kind of marketing is that people diminish themselves to the point of total worthlessness and disappear into themselves. The really sad and pathetic motivation behind it all is simply greed and making money. And we have bought it all; the belief, the solution and the products. We allowed them to break us and then to fix us and we paid a lot of money for the privilege.

Get this – some clever-dick is going to package a jar of mud, put it in a crystal jar and go on TV and convince us that this gunk will smooth out wrinkles and give you a youthful, alluring completion. His mate, a bigger and more ambitious conman can’t believe the amount of dollars rolling in and decides to crank it up a bit. He has a magic syringe which pumps poison into your face, paralyses your expression and calls it ‘a cure for frown and smile lines’. It’s phenomenal! He makes a bundle and inspires many others to come up with all kinds gimmicks and gadgets.

Well, no one in their right mind would believe this nonsense!

That is unless it’s repeated over and over. That’s the thing with brainwashing; it needs repetition. It also helps to have testimonials; we like to know others have tried it and can confirm it works for them. Celebrities (another marketing tool) wouldn’t endorse crap if it wasn’t true would they? Beautiful celebrities (The epitome of happily ever after) show us their secrets to success:

Silicone bags inserted into breasts

Vacuums sucking out thighs

Daisy Duck lips

Acid skin peels

Plastic nose, cheeks and chin

And sew and tighten up that vagina!

You have got to be joking – no one would be fooled into doing that! Billions of bucks say that you are wrong. All it takes is to convince you that you are not okay, you are not worthy, not loveable and not ever going to be happy. And that is so easy to do because right from the start you were brainwashed into believing that love is only for the young, the beautiful and the rich. You probably don’t realize this either, but you, yes you, are a part of the propaganda and you are endorsing and promoting it.

Your ridiculous stiletto shoes which have deformed your feet and weakened your knees and ankles are a part of the game. The yo-yo dieting, binging and purging. Your outrageously expensive clothing, perfumes and cosmetics are all a part you play in perpetuating ‘The Beauty Myth’.

Now don’t get me wrong here, I am not opposed to people looking good. I totally agree that looking good can make us feel good. I am also aware that looking good can be attractive and alluring. BUT, it’s Not All That!

It’s the lies that I find offensive; the stupidity and the destruction that those lies perpetuate. I’m not talking about make-up covering blemishes or enhancing skin tone, I am talking about the cosmetic industry covering up true beauty. I am talking about The Cinderella complex; our own participation in maintaining these unrealistic and dangerous beliefs. Women are competing with other women in a battle of illusion; disrespecting and destroying themselves and their sisters.

This is what it all boils down to: We have been brainwashed into believing that youth and beauty equals happiness – which translates into love and security. That’s the whole Cinderella quest. We all want to love and to be loved and feel secure. What we have all been brainwashed into believing is that love and security are only available to the young, beautiful or rich.

Men haven’t escaped either; they are suffering the Prince Charming scandal as well. Money is the mark of a man. Short, fat, bald, cigar smoking millionaires dripping with young hopeful starlets – what a pathetic sight to see! But someone obviously believes it.

I’m not trying to downgrade wealth; having money is good, much better than not and ditto for beauty. The point is that we have accepted it as a measure of human value. Much worst than that though, we allow ourselves to be judged and we judge others by this yardstick. Isn’t it time that we set examples of human value by being true to who we are? Isn’t beauty really just a mask? Let’s all just peel it off and have a peek at what’s inside.

Every age has its own beauty. In many cultures the elders are the wise and respected members of the community. Or more succinctly the most loved and honoured. Isn’t it time we all took a more realistic look at these ideals and worked towards reshaping and reassessing our values? It’s time for Prince Charming to show some integrity. Tonight as you hot wax your legs, think of me; curled up on the lounge wearing pajamas and Ugg boots, laughing, talking and loving my old man. Heh, I’m no Cinderella myself!

An Innovative Way To Natural Beauty

An Innovative Way To Natural Beauty

Global warming and climate change are now major concerns for humanity and our natural environment, due to ever increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 (Carbon Dioxide). Without Government regulations to enforce change industries and companies must take their own initiative to adopt more sustainable practices.

Organic Care is a hair care brand developed by Australian based Natures Organics P/L who has initiated the world’s first bio-pack in the hair care industry. Setting an industry benchmark with an innovative and environmentally responsible solution that took a shift away from crude oil based plastic bottles, into corn-based packaging. Natures Organics estimated it would prevent 300,000 kg’s of CO2 going into the atmosphere in the first year of Organic Care’s Bio-pack.

The future of Bio-Plastic will see the bottle either recycled for re-use, or being placed into green waste bins and taken to a commercial composting station. The degraded material will then be available for use in gardens and farms to grow new crops. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a technology that could replace many traditional polypropylene bottles that rely heavily on fossil fuels, which result in an estimated 3.4kg of CO2 for every kilogram of plastic. In contrast, the growth of plant material such as corn starch to sustain PLA production will generate a carbon filtration process, and support a new era in sustainable plastic production and the offset of CO2 emissions.

Organic Care demonstrates that there are alternatives available that reduce an environmental footprint, while not diminishing the quality of a product. Natures Organics is proud to be the first in the world to provide bio-packaging for hair care products with Organic Care.  At a time when consumers demand environmentally responsible products Natures Organics has responded with more sustainable packaging, a technology that deserves attention and support in today’s marketplace.

All products of Organic Care are BFAD approved and available in all Watson’s outlets – for more environmental tips and information, visit www.naturesorganics.com.

Home-Made Herbal Beauty Products

Home-Made Herbal Beauty Products

Basic Ingredients

The most important consideration to bear in mind when making herbal preparations is to only use the best quality products you can find. Good quality oils and natural essential oils will combine to make a far superior product than that produced by cheap oil and chemical, synthetic oils. Natural products are far less likely to cause skin allergies, but it is always wise to test your finished product on a small patch of your own skin if not on that of the recipient.

Essential oils are produced from many different scented plants, using both the leaf and stalk, or flower, depending on the plant concerned. Although it is possible to extract these essential oils yourself, it is a long process and the fun of making some herbal beauty products as gifts is to have fairly instant results. If you find concocting potions really appealing, there are plenty of opportunities for further experimentation to be found in the many specialist books available.

As with every product, it is the packaging that gives the finishing touch and makes all the difference between something that looks home-made and slightly dubious or exciting and luxurious. If you keep your eyes open in antique shops and yard sales, you will discover that there are plenty of old and interesting bottles around. Thick glass bottles in a green or blue tone can look wonderful when decorated with a pretty satin ribbon and a few flowers. Sealing is probably best done with a cork, which can be trimmed to fit any size of bottle. Screw-top bottles are another possibility but they don’t have the same old-fashioned appeal.

Another lovely idea is to buy a glass scent bottle with a ground stopper to prevent evaporation. The container could then be treasured and reused many times. Atomizers can give a marvelous feeling of luxury to some home-made scented waters. There are many unusual perfume bottles available and they make a stunning display on a pretty dressing table. As a complete contrast, there are also some promisingly shaped containers to be found in grocery stores and supermarkets; if you look carefully next time you are shopping, you’ll be amazed at how many suitable shapes and sizes there are amongst the mustard pots, vinegar jars, mayonnaise jars or even bottles of squashes and cordials. You may have to cover the lid, or substitute a cork for the screw top depending on how attractive it is once opened, but nevertheless there is plenty of scope.

Always label your product carefully and add instructions if it should be kept in the refrigerator or in cool conditions. Giving a use-by date might also be a good idea if something has a fairly short life. Labels can be decorated by hand or stenciled and tied with a ribbon around the neck of the bottle. You could also use a sticky label and attach it to the body of the bottle. Several products can then be packaged together in a hamper or basket, with cotton wool balls or other packaging to fill the basket and prevent the bottles from breaking. Home-made pot-pourri makes a very good filler for baskets – you can carefully arrange a selection of bottles amongst the pot-pourri, then cover the basket with swathes of cellophane before decorating it with a pretty bow.

Bath-Time Products

Nothing works more magic than a perfumed soak in a warm bath after a really tiring or stressful day. The smell of the herbal products can add a great deal to that relaxation and many bath preparations are very simple to make.

There are two main groups of herbs in these preparations – herbs to promote relaxation and those that help to revive you. The relaxing herbs include camomile, scented geranium, jasmine, lavender, neroli (orange blossom) and hops. The more stimulating and reviving herbs include basil, lemon verbena, rosemary, melissa and bergamot.

Although it is a tempting thought to strew freshly picked herbs across the waters of your calming bath, I wouldn’t recommend that you try it! Speaking from bitter experience, it causes untold blockage problems in the plumbing and feels very uncomfortable when you sit on a particularly sharp stalk! The best way to use fresh herbs is to place them in a muslin bath bag.

Bath Bags

Cut out some 9-inch diameter circles of muslin and place 2 tablespoons of roughly torn fresh herbs in the middle of each one. Dried herbs are just as successful. Gather the edges of the circle together and make into a small bundle, holding it in place with an elastic band. Then attach ribbons around the bundle to cover the elastic band, making a long enough loop to hang it from the taps so it will dangle in the water. A set of bath bags, with different colored ribbons to denote different herbs or mixtures of herbs, could be put together with a collection of other bath-time treats. Do write clear instructions on a label so they don’t get mistaken for bouquet garni and put in a stew!

Oatmeal can be added to the contents of the bath bags. Use equal quantities of herbs and oatmeal, as it helps to soften the skin.

 Bath Oils

These are very simple to make and very relaxing. The oil base should be good quality – preferably almond for normal to dry skin or safflower for normal to greasy skin. The only oil that will completely disperse in bathwater is a form of castor oil called turkey red oil. However, it is not easily available in health food stores, unlike the others, and so I would recommend trying the almond or safflower oils instead.

Choose some essential oils that will relax or revive (see the suggestions above) and make sure they are good quality natural oils rather than chemical ones. Chemical fragrances are excellent for pot-pourris and products that will not come into contact with the skin, but it is safer to use natural oils for skin preparations, in case the recipient is allergic to the chemical ones.

To make the oils, add 5 drops of essential oil to every tablespoon of almond or safflower oil that you put into the bottle. Shake well before use. You can use just one essential oil, such as rosemary or lavender, or you can mix them – rose and lavender, or rosemary and orange are good blends. The possibilities are endless and the fun starts when you begin to choose your essential oils. These should be available at your local health food store or beauty shop.

Washballs and Soaps

Washballs date back to Elizabethan times and so are traditional shapes of soap. Making soap at home can be rather time-consuming, so I have included a recipe that uses a pure, fragrance-free ready-made soap to speed up the process. Traditionally, soap is made with tallow, which is rendered or melted animal fat. It should be available from your local butcher and you can melt it in a heavy saucepan over a low heat and then strain it into screw-top jam jars for storage. Take care when making soap as the caustic soda that is used can burn your skin, so do wear rubber gloves and handle it with care.

Lavender and Rose Washballs

2×5 oz bars plain Castile soap, finely grated
8 fl oz rose or lavender water
5 drops lavender essential oil
5 drops rose essential oil

Heat 3 fl oz of the rose or lavender water and pour it over the soap. Let is stand for about ten minutes. Mix well and then incorporate the rose and lavender oils. Leave to harden for two days. Then make the mixture into small balls, each one about the size of a table tennis ball or slightly smaller, and leave to dry in a dry airy place. When the washballs have completely hardened, you can polish them with cloth moistened with the rest of the rose or lavender water, or alternatively wet your hands with the rose or lavender water and rub the balls between your hands. Allow to dry out before packaging.

Floral Vinegar for the Bath

Floral vinegars can soften the skin when used in the bath and are very refreshing if kept in the fridge and dabbed onto a fevered brow in moments of stress! Cider vinegar has a delicate apple scent and so makes an excellent base.

There are several herbs and flowers that can be mixed with the vinegar. The main consideration will probably be which ingredients are easiest for you to obtain. Successful plants include jasmine flowers, rose petals, lavender flowers and stalks, scented geranium leaves, lemon balm or lemon verbena leaves and rosemary.

Place a large handful of mixed flowers and herbs or a single variety (rose and lavender with a little jasmine works well, or scented geranium and lemon verbena) in a glass bottle and fill up with cider vinegar. Replace the lid or seal with a cork and place in a sunny spot for a couple of weeks. Then strain the vinegar, making sure that you release as much moisture from the herbs as possible, and pour into a measuring jug. Half-fill a bottle with the scented vinegar and top up with spring water. One bottle of vinegar will therefore fill two bottles of the same size with the floral vinegar. To use, pour a generous quantity into the bath with the taps full on.

Orange Blossom Bath Salts

8 oz baking soda
1 lb coarse sea salt
1/2 fl oz neroli (orange blossom) essential oil

Stir together the baking soda and sea salt, then add the essential oil and store in a sealed jar. Food coloring may be added if you wish. Use three tablespoons per bath.

Lemon Verbena Bubbles

12 oz pure soap flakes
3/4 pint spring water
1/4 fl oz lemon verbena essential oil
1 fl oz vodka
2 fl oz glycerine

Heat the water and dissolve the soap flakes in it. In another container, mix the essential oil with the glycerine and vodka. Combine these two mixtures and add a drop of yellow or green food coloring if you wish. Store in a wide-mouthed jar with a sealed lid.

Orange and Cinnamon Soap

4 fl oz spring water
2 tbsp caustic soda
4 oz melted tallow
1 tsp neroli (orange blossom) essential oil
1 tsp cinnamon essential oil
4 fl oz safflower oil

Wearing rubber gloves, pour the water into a large heat-proof glass bowl. Add the caustic soda and stir well with a wooden spoon. Add the melted tallow and stir vigorously. Then add the safflower oil and the neroli and cinnamon essential oils. Beat well and pour into plastic molds. Leave to set. Once they are set, ease the soaps out of the molds and leave in a dry airy place for two weeks.

Cucumber and Mint Soap

4 fl oz spring water
large bunch of fresh mint, any variety
2 tbsp caustic soda
4 oz white vegetable fat, melted
6 drops mint essential oil
8 fl oz almond oil
1/2 cucumber

Liquidize, or place in a food processor, the mint leaves and spring water. Pour into a bowl and leave for a couple of hours. Liquidize (or process) the cucumber. Strain the spring water into a large heat-proof glass bowl, discarding the mint leaves, then add the caustic soda (making sure you are wearing rubber gloves). Stir with a wooden spoon then add the melted vegetable fat. Add 4 tbsp of cucumber puree, the almond oil and mint essential oil. Beat well and then pour the mixture into plastic molds. Small soaps can be made in shaped ice cube molds or larger ones in yogurt pots or similar containers. Leave to set for two days.

Gently ease the soaps out of the molds and then leave in an airing cupboard or other dry airy place for two weeks before using.

Note: It can help to line the molds with cling film as this may overcome any problems in removing the soap once it has set.
