Improve health and waste nothing: The Elemental Essentialz formula

Rick Lingle, Technical Editor — Packaging Digest, 6/14/2013 1:02:16 PM

Theresa HarrisTheresa HarrisTheresa Harris, founder/CEO of Elemental Essentialz, presents her unique sustainability-driven insights Tues., June 18, from 1:00 – 2:45 p.m. as part of the EastPack seminar series. For more information or to register for the conference or the show, visit

As a chemistry teacher and former developmental specialist, Theresa saw firsthand the increase in developmental delays and disorders. Along with research linking chemicals found in our homes to an increase in various health issues, she felt an obligation to take what she knew and formulate cleaners that were both safe and effective.

Additional research led her to the realization that her customers were also concerned with consumption levels and waste production. The rebel in her itched to upset the status quo, and she decided to take on both issues, making it her mission to “Improve Health & Waste Nothing.”

Packaging Digest asked her to share insider information on her approach to business and packaging.

Q: What was your hobby and how was that propelled into a growing business?
A: Cake Pops (cake on a stick)! Unfortunately my teenage sons and I ate them faster than I could make them, and I realized I needed a hobby that nurtured my creativity, not my waistline. Around the same time I happened upon an article about the dangers of certain chemicals in cleaning products. I was shocked to learn the ingredients in household cleaners did not have to be listed in their entirety. I decided to make homemade cleaners that weren’t dangerous for my family. In doing so, I had three priorities, that they needed to be safe, smell nice and be pretty.

I started with used wine bottles because they were beautiful and free! As an aside, it turned out that many high school teachers enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day. I was proud of my little sets of cleaners and started sharing them with friends and family. The response was amazing…and here we are!

Q: What are the essentials of your “waste nothing” approach?
Our approach is to bridge the gap between knowing what is right and being able to achieve it. Our customers want to consume and waste less. They do not want to negatively impact our planet. Current efforts to help make this happen, including improvements in packaging, are often “invisible” to consumers. That’s not to say those efforts aren’t admirable. The impact of these changes on our planet is positive and significant, but the customer doesn’t get to “feel” they are making their own contribution. By packaging in refillable and reusable glass bottles, we make it easy for our customers to feel good about joining the mission to “Reuse for Zero Waste.”

Q: Why has this resonated with retailers and consumers?
Ultimately, we are making it easy for our customers to feel better about how they are treating our planet. Our products are safe, beautiful and, simply by purchasing their first bottles, consumers can “waste nothing.” The ambiguity over how, where or even if our bottles can be recycled is a non-issue and our customers never have to feel guilty about adding another empty household cleaner to our landfills or oceans. For retailers, I think they recognize the priority consumers are now placing on reducing waste. Providing a new and unique solution for their customers is an obvious win-win.

Q: What is one piece of advice you can share with consumer packaged goods companies?
I feel funny offering advice to an industry to which I am still so very new, especially since I feel much of our success came about almost accidently. By hard work, yes. But a brilliant and calculated packaging plan, no.

I’ll explain why I think that’s important. We chose wine bottles because they were pretty and, in the beginning, free. We started allowing our customers to refill them to save money—ours and theirs. Fast forward almost two years…our packaging approach is now considered by many to be sustainable and innovative. Thankfully, these are two good qualities to have these days.

Looking back, I just wanted to make something that was safe and beautiful and the package was always part of the product.

My advice would be, when considering a new package, treat it as part of the product, not separate from it, not something to be discarded. Ask yourself, is it safe? Is it beautiful? And will it always be? If the answer is no, I guess I would ask, what can be done to change that?

    We would love your feedback!

Why a Portable Water Purification System Tops Bottled Water

Why a Portable Water Purification System Tops Bottled Water

A lot of people are wasting hard-earned dollars when they drink bottled water instead of purchasing a simple portable water purification system. The money that you save by switching to a carry along system would simply astonish you over the course of a year or two. Not to mention, your water would be safer.

Most people mistakenly believe that the water they are drinking is safe, because the bottle advertises it as pure, natural spring water. This advertising gives people a kind of false comfort; they believe the water’s purity has been tested independently. However, pure water is definitely not what the bottled water companies are selling you. Only the promise of pure water.
I can say with confidence that a portable water purification system is a better choice for drinking on the go. With this type of filtered system, you are guaranteed to remove lead, chlorine, and a great number of other chemicals from your water. With bottled water, you are only guaranteed to have no idea what is going into your body.
Federal regulations for bottled water state that it has to be as safe to drink as tap water, but not any safer. How comforting is that? What you are buying is probably ordinary tap water that has simply been filtered to eliminate odor. Yes, there have been maximum contaminant levels set for bottled water, but the Environmental Protection Agency rarely enforces them.
Another thing that you will never have to worry about with a portable water purification system is BPA or phthalates. BPA and phthalates are polymers used in the production of both hard and soft plastics. These carcinogenic agents seep out of the plastic of your store-bought bottles during storage and transport, and end up in the actual water in the bottle.
What you want to do is use a product that is BPA and phthalate free, which is exactly what a filtered bottle offers you. There are filtered sports bottles that you can buy that are rugged and inexpensive. Or you can purchase a top of the line model with a set of three cartridges for only .95.
A portable water purification system is the perfect answer for the car, the office, or the gym. Anywhere outside of your home you can have access to water that is clean and safe to drink. While at home, I encourage to enjoy clean, pure water by installing a high quality home water purification system for the entire family.
Purchasing a portable water purification system maximizes water safety for everyone in the family. You can guarantee that your family is safe from contaminated water no matter where they are.

Pure Water Products ? Bottled Water Vs Water Filtration Unit

Pure Water Products ? Bottled Water Vs Water Filtration Unit

Since, our childhood we have been told that 2/3rd of our body weight is water and we should drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to lead a healthy and ail-free life. However, if the drinking water is impure and it contains traces of pollutants and chemicals, then drinking the same could do more harm than good. This is where pure water products play a pivotal role.

As you know, bottled water and water filtration units are the two broad categories for pure water products. However, which amongst them is the best? Which one should you select?

Well, the answer lies in the quality of water produced by both the pure water products. Below are some shocking facts for you, which you might not be aware of and might want to consider before making a decision.

Bottled water In a recent study, it was discovered that more than 25% of bottled water is not much better than the tap waters. Many bottled water manufacturers use a very preliminary filtering process and then package it in a nice and shinning bottle and sell at huge prices. We as end customers, think price is related to quality; and therefore, consume these bottles containing nothing actually the tap water at the cost of your hard earned money and breach of trust.

Besides the quality of water in these bottles, the quality of plastic used further degrades the quality of water. This is because; chemicals from inferior plastic can percolate into the drinking water with time.

Moreover, these bottles have environmental impact too. Plastic used in them do not degrade naturally and therefore, are one of the contributor to increasing pollution in today’s world.

Filtration systems Thanks to the increasing pollution, because of which new pollutants are being introduced in water almost every day. This is where the effectivity of water filtration technologies comes into the picture. You will be surprised to know the filtration techniques that used to be the best in the past stands nowhere in the list of best filtration processes as recommended by the experts.

Water filtered from out dated methodologies like reverse osmosis, distillation, etc. is not considered to fit for human consumption. It contains traces of many chemicals like chlorine, and many carcinogenic compounds like THMs (trihalomethanes) and VOCs (Volatile organic compounds).

These old technologies are now replaced by innovative processes like carbon filtration, ion exchange and sub micron filtration techniques.

In conclusion, both the above pure water products are good if they result in healthy, clean and pure water. However, if you ask me, my vote goes to high-end water filtration units that can remove the toxins present to water to undetectable levels. Since, they have onetime investment you can save your money and efforts in ordering bottled water every week.

Bubbled Plastic Poly Envelopes

Bubbled Plastic Poly Envelopes

As we know plastic is use widely in our daily life. It is a synthetic solid material which has the property of plasticity. By using of this property plastic material can teds up to certain limit so we can make any shape or size from plastic easily. But there is also one drawback of this property, once plastic is molded in any desired shape than it is impossible to remold it. Various types of plastics is available in the market, each type has the different applications depending upon its impurities and various properties. Plastic is a complicated chemical compound which is made from different chemicals and was discovered in 1855 by Alexander Parkes. Plastic has different use likes tubes, bottles, boxes, different appliances, electronic circuit chips, CD’s and Envelopes etc.

Bubble plastic is one of the type of plastic which is widely use in the making of the various envelops. The purpose behind in making the envelope from Bubbled Plastic Poly is; this poly plastic is very light in weight so obviously the weight of envelope is also reduced which is very important factor. The name bubbled plastic itself indicates the constructional feature of it. This poly plastic is consists of large number of bubbles which look like a water bubbles. These bubbles are nothing but two different layers of poly plastic which is filled with the air in between. The aim behind those bubbles is to protect the goods or whatever is carrying in the Bubble envelope. When there is certain vibration or sudden impact on the envelope which is made up of bubbled plastic poly these air bubbles resist the impact and burst out so the impact is resist and the goods which is carried out in it is stay safe.

The poly plastic materials are also water and tear resist so these envelopes are also waterproof. This arrangement of bubble is done in certain manner by considering the maximum safety. This Bubbled plastic poly envelopes are available in wide range of verity, types and sizes which are totally depends on the applications. These envelopes are also environment friendly because instated of bulky and big boxes this are always reliable. Reuses of these envelopes are also possible so it is economically good. The cost of Bubbled plastic envelopes is also very cheap as compare to other envelops.

Bubbled plastic poly envelopes are widely use in the mailing purpose where the delicate or electronics goods are to be mail. The components of this kind of goods is very small and can also damage by any small vibration so for protect them while traveling and handling the Bubbled plastic poly envelopes are used. These envelopes are also use widely because they are very compact in size as compare to the boxes and can able to tend in any shape and size because it is made up of plastic material. By revolving around the goods or any particular thing user can able to deliver it very safely without damaging.

Fruit Fly Problem ? You?ve Got the Problem and We?ve Got the Solution!

Fruit Fly Problem ? You?ve Got the Problem and We?ve Got the Solution!

Fruit fly maybe a problem in every household but getting rid of them should not be too much of a problem. There are many ways to get rid of them. There are natural organic ways of trapping these flies and there are also ways where you can get rid of them easily by using insect spray.

Organic Ways of Trapping Fruit flies

Organic ways include natural methods of trapping the fruit flies by using fresh fruits, cola, beer and other possible ways that would not include chemical insecticides.

The basic ones include vinegar and citrus scented dishwashing detergent. The scent of this will attract the flies to the scent and drown them when they land on the vinegar. You should always keep a fresh batch every night so that there is a strong scent.

Another way would be to put food / cola / beer in a jar and closing that jar with a plastic wrap and sealing it with a rubber band. Poke some holes on the plastic wrap to easily trap the fruit fly. Always remember to remove or throw out the batch everyday to avoid breeding a new batch of flies.

Inorganic Way of Getting Rid of Fruit flies

An inorganic way of getting rid of them would be to use some sort of insecticide which kills all insects. Spraying this in your house before you leave will avoid exposure to any chemicals in the product and kill the fruit flies.

Or, you could hire an exterminator if there is already a large infestation in your house. By doing this, you are ensured that the fruit flies will be gone by the time you get home.

Keeping It Clean

Of course, all of this would be fruitless if you do not keep your house clean. Keeping your house clean by throwing away rotten foods, removing crumbs on your table, cleaning under your stove and all the basic needs to avoid breeding fruit flies.

Stainless steel water bottles: What are the advantages of using stainless steel water bottles

Stainless steel water bottles: What are the advantages of using stainless steel water bottles

When it comes to buying a drink bottle there are many alternatives, most of which can be compared and bought online, but the most popular type of drink bottle that is increasingly being purchased is the stainless steel water bottles. There is a long list of advantages for using stainless steel water bottles, including durability and reusability, but the real benefits of stainless steel water bottles become apparent when they are compared to plastic drink bottles and aluminium water bottles.

Top quality manufacturers of reusable drink bottles have begun designing and manufacturing stainless steel water bottles to replace plastic and aluminium drink bottle alternatives that are currently on the market. Stainless steel, and particularly 304 grade (or 18/8), is one of the most hygienic materials available, so hygienic in fact that the same material is often used in the manufacture of surgical equipment, kitchen utensils and now drink bottles. Stainless steel water bottles therefore have the advantage of reducing the risk of water contamination that is apparent with plastic and aluminium water bottle alternatives, through the potential leaching of BPA and other chemicals. Stainless steel also provides bacteria resistance, which means that individuals concerned about their health can now purchase a water bottle that is lightweight, durable and free from chemical leaching.

Water stored in stainless steel water bottles is highly effective in retaining the flavour and purity of the drink, which is not necessarily the case with plastic or aluminium water bottle alternatives. In aluminium drink bottles for example, an epoxy resin inner lining is baked on at 400 Degrees Celsius in order to prevent the aluminium from contaminating the water. This epoxy resin however contains many chemicals that are themselves, at risk of contaminating water over time, as they eventually degrade and leach into the water. Similar to plastic these many different types of chemicals are consumed by drinking the contaminated water, which over time increases the risk of affecting your health, particularly if the drink bottle is used on a regular basis, such as daily or over a long period of time.

Given a similar weight, durability and price to plastic water bottles and aluminium drink bottle alternatives, it is apparent that stainless steel water bottles should not be overlooked when buying a drink bottle. Their superior material qualities make it a better alternative for reducing the risk of water contamination and the need to effectively maintain it. They are proof that drink bottles are not all the same, and should be researched and chosen appropriate considerations.

Metallic ink, UV varnishes, lamination ? eco-friendly or unsustainable?

Metallic ink, UV varnishes, lamination ? eco-friendly or unsustainable?

UV varnishes

Large amount of energy needed for production.
Cannot be recycled because they can’t be de-inked, therefore they are destined for landfill.
Solvent based varnishes are also harmful to the environment as they emit VOCs.

Vegetable based, soy based and aqueous (water-based) are all more environmentally friendly.
Nevertheless, chemicals are required to wash the machine after the use of any varnishes therefore it is better to avoid varnish altogether if you are concerned about its environmental impact.

Metallic Ink

Contains metallic particles which cannot be recycled.
When these metallic particles end up in landfill, they leak toxic compounds into the water table.
They can also be harmful to animals and humans if inhaled or absorbed.

Bespoke finishes can add the extra WOW factor to your CD/DVD packaging without the use of metallic ink; wewow offer embossing and de-bossing which create stunning visual effects.
If your heart is set on using a metallic effect then why not use a mirror shine or metallic board to produce your CD/DVD packaging?  wewow now stock the full range of ‘Mirri’ boards, which includes FSC and recycled stock and can be printed on in full colour.

Matt and gloss laminates can be used for effect and are often applied to prevent print cracking on CD/DVD packaging which is going to be creased and folded.

Laminated packaging cannot be recycled and therefore is destined for landfill.

Bio-degradable laminates are available, although they are still in limited supply and are currently only available on very large quantities.  Bio-degradable materials are also unsuitable for recycling meaning that a card-board packaging product cannot be recycled if it has a bio-degradable laminate applied.

Wewow stock a number of gloss/matt finish boards, produced from sustainable sources, which can be used as eco-friendly alternatives to lamination.

wewow provide CD Replication and DVD Replication services to major businesses, charities, public sector organisations and bands/independent artists. We have developed an enviable reputation for quality, service and competitive prices and would welcome the opportunity to work with you on your next project.

wewow specialise in the design and production of bespoke, eco-friendly packaging for CDs and DVDs.

The Truth About Harsh Pet Stain Removers Chemicals That Are Hurting Your Family

The Truth About Harsh Pet Stain Removers Chemicals That Are Hurting Your Family

Ever Wonder Your Pet Stain Removers Are Created With?

Did you know that older pet stain removers were developed to make your pet pee more. You daily household pet stain removers do have so many secrets. What do you really know about them?

I am about to tell you what you are cleaning pet stains with and when you leave your pet alone what type of chemicals you are leaving behind.

In this article you will learn about the health effects your children, pets and the earth are suffering from simply because you may have not known better.

Important Facts That Open Your Eyes

1. Many childhood problems such as eczema, asthma, and learning disabilities are induced by toxins from household cleaners and toxic raw materials.

2. EPA Considers Common Household Cleaners “Hazardous Waste” – household over cleaners, drain cleaners, wood, tile and grout cleaners, tub cleaner and bleach.

3. Around the year in 2005 218,316 reported poisonous exposures from your common household cleaning products. That is about 9 out of 10.

4. In the United States the common household generates more than 20 pounds of hazardous waste per year. In fact the average home will accumulate 100 pounds of household hazardous waste.

5. According to a Toronto Air Conference that was done for 15 year study women who have done work at home had a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who worked away from home. The study came to find that it was a direct relation to the increased exposure to toxic chemicals, many which have been found in your common household cleaners.

Natural Cleaning Products In The Home Need To Be Safe

Your home should be the safest place in the world for your family and pets.

Although natural cleaning products seem to be available they do not seem to work as well. Especially in the terms of pet stains and odors.

In fact did you know that pet stain removers in the past were developed with ammonia which is toxic, but also this ammonia raw material was known to have your pets continue to pee in the same spot.

Simply because animals have ammonia in there urine and believe when you clean the stain with an ammonia based pet stain cleaner. Another dog is in fact peeing in that spot.

How do I Find Reliable Information If I Want to be More Green But I Don’t Want Others to Starve?

How do I Find Reliable Information If I Want to be More Green But I Don’t Want Others to Starve?

Copyright (c) 2010 Alison Withers

Balancing concern for the environment by choosing to local, healthy food against the possibility that it may cause someone somewhere else in the world hardship or even malnutrition or starvation is uncomfortable.

In addition we all want to do our best for our families by buying the healthiest food we can find and at the same time keeping down the costs of things like our weekly shopping bills.

How on earth can we know we’re making the right choices and being as “green” as possible, given the plethora of conflicting information we get, the inter-governmental and scientific squabbles and the sheer amount of time and energy we would have to devote to research?

How, therefore, can we eat healthily, be sure there are no chemical residues in our food and be sure also that the carbon footprint of our locally-produced food is not actually greater than food imported from somewhere else in the world?

Of course there are labels on food, but they need to be clear, understandable and consistent and checking every label on the weekly shop with a couple of tetchy toddlers in tow, perhaps, at the end of a working day, really – life’s too short!

A look at the 2009 laws on food labelling in the UK is enough to give the ordinary shopper a headache. This extract is just a sample. It says that “fibre”, in the context of nutrition labelling, means carbohydrate polymers with three or more monomeric units, which are neither digested nor absorbed in the human small intestine and then lists a string of definitions.

And then there’s packaging! Producers are bound by the Packaging (Essential REquiremnets) Regulations, which list the maximum levels of various chemicals that are allowed in the packaging, as well as levels of packaging that can be used, and requires them to be made of recyclable materials.

Large-scale producers also have to comply with the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations.

The Food Standards Agency also has rules covering the mislabelling of foods.

So there are three sets of rules simply on packaging in labelling, before we even consider nutrition content and although it’s good that they exist what’s really needed is consistent, clear information in a language consumers can understand.

Then there are the scientific disagreements. It has been suggested, for example, that the carbon footprint of some food produced in Africa may actually be lower than it is for locally-produced organic foods.

There’s no more agreement when it comes to licensing the new low-chem agricultural products being created by biopesticides developers.

Yet it’s generally agreed that they are considerably more environmentally friendly than many of the older generation of chemical-based yield enhancers, fertilisers and pesticides and have the potential to help keep food costs down when compared to organically grown products.

These new generation biofertilisers, biofungicides and yield enhancers have the potential to help small farmers in developing countries both protect their land and improve its yield with obvious benefits to their incomes and to us all in being able to buy affordable, healthy food.

In the context of health and nutrition A World Health Organisation publication (2008) says that what’s needed is a sound communication and information strategy, coordinating and creating synergy among the various media, is essential for supporting the adoption of healthy lifestyles and the maintenance of food safety and sustainable food supplies.

It adds that currently, messages provided through nutrition education campaigns are often contradicted by commercial communication practices ….. and that consumers find that current nutrition label formats are generally confusing and do not help them to make healthy choices.

The WHO’s assessment applies equally to this discussion.

If we are to be able to change our shopping habits to do our bit towards a more sustainable environment, reducing food scarcity and reversing the impacts of climate change we need information about what we’re buying in a form that’s consistent wherever we live, that we can rely on and in words we can understand.

We need more consistency in information about and labelling of food, such as whether it has been grown using the new low-chem agricultural products being created by Biopesticides developers, to help shoppers make “green” choices, says consumer journalist Ali Withers.

water bottle with filter

water bottle with filter

There are many types of water bottles with filters around these days.  Some are meant to actually aid people in areas that do not have abundant sources of clean drinking water.  These types of water bottles with filters are called The Lifesaver bottle.  This bottle’s filter can be interchangeable and can purify between 4,000 and 6,000 liters. It filters out objects such as viruses, bacteria and heavy metal.   This type of water bottle with a carbon filter does not require chemicals to clean the water.   The process of cleaning the water with this bottle only takes 20 seconds, and filters 1.5 pints of water in that time.

The Lifesaver bottle does have its’ limits, and will no longer clean water once this limit has been reached.  The Lifesaver bottle has also been used by the military.  A much larger of the Lifesaver bottle, which is called the Lifesaver Jerrycan, uses the same filtering process. This can is able to filter 10,000 to 20,000 liters of water.  One jerrycan filter is able to provide plenty of water for a family of four for a three year span.  In 2007, the LifeSaver bottle was tested and was found to completely filter out bacteria and viruses.  This is a great scientific achievement that will allow people in disaster areas, access to clean water, which is of upmost importance. You can also use a water bottle with a filter to save money and reduce waste.  You can save money by not buying expensive bottled water and  in the meantime, reduce plastic bottle waste.  Most of these systems are not as complex as the Lifesaver bottle.
