China's PET Production, Consumption and Forecast Analysis – polyester, PET, PTA-plastics industry

Polyester ( PET , Polyethylene terephthalate) is terephthalic acid (PTA) and ethylene glycol (EG) produced through condensation. As the different ways of production and processing, the product is divided into polyester chips, polyester film and polyester (PET’s scientific name), polyester filament and staple fiber points, polyester filament yarn accounted for about 62% of staple fiber about 38%, filament for textile enterprises to use, staple fiber and cotton blended general. Section is divided into bottle grade chips, film grade chips and fiber chips, fiber sections were dissolved spinning into fiber, film grade chips bottle grade and generally no longer used for fiber production. What a Changing Savings and Export Rate Tell Us

What can we learn from the insight that the U.S. consumer is saving more and Chinese exports are falling? The chart below from Bloomberg has an interesting story to tell. The yellow line represents the falling growth rate of Chinese exports vs. last year. The white line shows the rising savings rate of the U.S. consumer.

As the global recession reached its depths, China’s export growth fell, going negative at the end of 2008. This should be no surprise as U.S. consumers were buying much of China’s exports. As the recession wore on consumers curtailed their purchases causing the Chinese to cut their exports. As China’s exports fall, it is forcing the country to find new ways to help their economy grow.

To replace export growth, China has turned to expanding bank lending as a part of their stimulus package. Professor Michael Pettis from Peking University writes a blog titled Chinese Financial Markets. In his June 30th and July 8th entries, he discusses the dramatic expansion of bank lending in China. I encourage anyone who wants to learn more about the Chinese financial system to ready Michael’s blog. In June, new loans in China leapt more than 150% from May according to Professor Pettis.

As you might believe, many people believe this rapid expansion of lending will have serious consequences later. The Chinese government seeks to achieve an 8% growth rate to offset the affects of the falling exports. The expansion in lending has several results, some good and some bad. On the positive side, it encourages growth in consumption as more Chinese move into the middle class. This in turn helps the Chinese economy to continue to grow, while it stabilizes the political environment. It also funds further development of infrastructure that is a part of the large government stimulus program. According to the central government, almost 70% of the 6 billion stimulus package goes into infrastructure.

All this spending s intended to help offset the falling exports and keep the Chinese economic miracle on track. There is a good chance the massive expansion in credit will result in a new debt bubble. Professor Pettis expects this might happen in a couple of years. In the mean time China will be buying raw materials, manufactured and consumer goods to help fuel this growth. This growth in demand will have a positive affect on the exports of other countries, including the U.S. This is one of the reasons I believe exports will be a more important contributor to the recovery of the U.S. economy for several years.

What about the U.S. consumer and their higher savings rate. As the chart above shows people are saving more, which means they are spending less. Less spending translates into fewer imports to the U.S. Less spending also contributes to a slower economic recovery. In addition, the U.S. stimulus program is contributing to the higher savings rate as people put at least some of the stimulus money into the bank to help them replace the money they have lost over the last few years in the financial crisis.

If you are one of those people who have a job paid for by the stimulus, you will tend to put any extra you earn into a rainy day savings, as you remain worried about the longevity of the job at hand. You cannot blame people for saving more. In fact, longer term it will turn out to be a positive as higher savings provides capital for growth, money to help fund the growing U.S. debt and a cushion against another economic recession.

The question on many economists’ minds, will this higher savings rate be sustainable? I believe it will. First, they remember what happened either to them or to their parents and they do not want to see that happen again. Second, as evidence is showing from the “cash for clunkers” program, money spent on new cars is reducing spending on other consumer durable goods such as household appliances. There is just so much money to go around.

Third, the younger generation has seen first hand what happens when people spend too much and many are determined to be more reasonable in the future. Thank the green movement, as well as the extravagances of the 1990’s and 2000’s. In addition, college students have sizeable loans that they must pay off. Earlier generations did not face such a large debt when they started their work career after graduating from college.

All of these factors will help to sustain the higher savings rate in the United States. Unfortunately, a higher savings rate will limit the ability of the consumer to be the major driving force in any economic expansion. Instead of a 3% growth rate in consumer spending as we have experience in the past 20 years, the U.S. is more likely to see spending by people rise at the 1-2% rate for several years to come.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the expansion of U. S. consumer savings and falling rate of exports from China has an interesting story to tell. As investors, we should more cautious when considering that the cyclical recovery of consumer spending will be the same as it has in the recent past. In addition, the growing middle class in China means they will be demanding more goods and services, some of which will be imported. The companies that export to China will benefit from the growth in demand for their products.

The Natural Resources Council never actually sponsored a contest called “bottled water vs tap water.” That Council did not study the best means for broadcasting a decision in the “battle” of “tap versus bottled water.” Yet that Council did put out a report, a report in which the Council compared bottled water to tap.

What was in that report? What facts about bottled water and tap water were unearthed by the researchers who compiled that report? Did that report point to a clear winner in the contest of “bottled water vs tap water?” Did that report award any sort of trophy to the opinionated advocates who had dared to speak out on the issue of tap versus bottled water?

No the Natural Resources Council did not take any one “side” in the ongoing controversy surrounding water from a tap and from a bottle. The Council did not dispute the fact that consumption of tap water constitutes a willingness to take added risks. By the same token, the Council asked the public to bear in mind the following facts:

– Bottled water that is sold in the same state where it has been bottled does not need to meet FDA regulations.

– FDA regulations stipulate that tap water from a city faucet can have no confirmed E.coli or fecal coliform bacteria. A certain amount of coliform bacteria is allowed in bottled water.

– Water that comes from a city tap has been filtered and disinfected, according to federal regulations. No federal regulations insist upon the filtering and disinfection of bottled water.

– Tap water that comes from a city must be free of cancer causing chemicals, such as phthalate. Yet the FDA exempts bottled water from that requirement, even though bottled water comes in plastic containers (containers that contain phthalate)

While the Natural Resources Council has chosen not to take a “side” in the contest of “bottled water vs tap water,” it has certainly produced arguments that could be used to support either group of “contestants.” The Council has not declared any one “side” as the winner in the battle of “tap versus bottled water.” Yet the public has won access to important information, due to that same on-going “battle.”

The public has heard again about the toxic chemicals that can show up in tap water. By the same token, the public has discovered that bottled water is not much safer than tap water. At the same time, the public has been reminded that there is an alternative to both tap and bottled water.

Homeowners and business owners who want to provide employees, family members or guests with pure and good-tasting water should heed the mention of that alternative. What is that alternative? How can a homeowner implement use of that alternative?

That alternative involves installation in a home or business of a water purification device. An ever-widening circle of homeowners and business owners have chosen to use an activated carbon filter. The less we consume, the less energy is required to produce or transport products and the less waste and pollution we create, which in turn reduces our exposure to toxins. One of the easiest ways to reduce consumption is to re-use or reclaim products and/or materials instead of creating new ones to replace the old ones. Another is to purchase products that are made locally or as close to your home as possible.

 

Recycling comes last because it requires a lot of energy to recycle things. Some people believe that the energy required to recycle outweighs the benefits of recycling. But recycling is still a better option than tossing things in the trash where they wind up in landfills releasing noxious gasses –sometimes for hundreds of years!

 

To borrow a line from the world of computing, it’s all about I/O -that is inputs and outputs. If you want to know how to green any aspect of your lifestyle or make it more “earth-friendly,” there are 3 factors to consider:

 

1. Inputs: Who, What, Where, Why and How?

 

Start by looking at the inputs -everything that goes into making a particular product -from the ingredients, to the packaging, to how it’s distributed. Where are the ingredients or raw materials sourced from and how are they made? Are the processes for extracting them fundamentally safe for the environment? Is the manufacturing process moderately clean, very clean, somewhat dirty, or very dirty? Are there by-products that are toxic or can pollute the environment? How energy-intensive are the various processes used to make the finished product? Where is it made relative to where it’s sold? And how far does it have to travel before it reaches you, the end-user?

 

These are some of the ways to determine the carbon footprint for a product. The more energy and fuel it takes to move materials and finished product around and the farther it has to travel, the greater the carbon emissions which contribute to both pollution and global warming.

 

Other issues or concerns relating to this aspect of production include whether small producers (like farmers) are paid a fair price for materials or services; if workers are being needlessly exposed to any harm during the production process; or are subject to inhumane conditions.

 

2. The Impact of Products During Their Life Cycle

 

For personal care and beauty products, the key is always in the ingredients first, and packaging second. In the hierarchy of available options, plant-based products are clearly safer than their synthetic and petroleum-based counterparts. Plants have been used successfully throughout history for medicinal and beautification purposes, because as creatures of nature it follows that our bodies can comprehend and better utilize ingredients that exist in nature (whether ingested as food or absorbed into the skin through topical use). The advent of synthetics and petroleum by-products is relatively new from a historical perspective. Since they are “manufactured” as opposed to existing in nature, it makes sense that our bodies can and often do have a hard time dealing with them.

 

Of course, organically grown and produced products are safer because of the extremely low exposure to pesticides, and because organic farming practices are non-polluting and totally sustainable.

 

There are an alarming number of chemical and petroleum ingredients that go into making personal care and beauty products, not to mention some scary by-products of the manufacturing process. In March 2008, the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) commissioned a study that found that even some of the leading “natural” and “organic” personal care products contain a highly toxic ingredient called 1,4-Dioxane. This is a by-product of “Ethoxylation”, a cheap short-cut companies use to soften harsh ingredients. 1,4-Dioxane is considered a cancer-causing chemical by the State of California under it’s exhaustive Proposition 65 regulation.

 

When looking at the primary impact on your health and safety, you should also consider the secondary impact of washing these ingredients off your skin and down the drain. What happens when toxic chemicals and petroleum ingredients wind up in our rivers and streams? 1,4-Dioxane has been identified as a leading groundwater contaminant, and is a good example of the hidden dangers that can lurk in products we blithely assume are safe.

 

3. What Happens At the End of the Line?

 

When looking at the final impact of a personal care product on the environment, packaging probably matters most. There are certain types of plastic like PVC (Poly Vinyl Chloride) which is not recyclable and whose production is very “dirty.” Plastic can leach chemicals all throughout its life cycle, release toxins into surrounding communities during its manufacture, and can pose health risks from exposure to fumes when incinerated on the back-end.

 

Again, there is a hierarchy of preference when it comes to packaging starting with glass as the safest and most environmentally friendly option, followed by re-usable materials like aluminum or stainless steel (aluminum containers should have an FDA-approved Epoxy phenolic internal coating to prevent reactivity with its contents), and “friendlier,” recyclable plastics such as PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene). Of most concern to your health and the environment are plastics coded for recycling as #3, #6, and #7. Plastic containers that are acceptable are labeled #1, #2, #4, and #5.

 

To truly “Green” your personal care routine choose products that are designed with “environmental intelligence” from start to finish; are made entirely in the USA –preferably in the region where you live; and don’t pose any known safety risks to your health.

Our planet is in peril. It’s in the news and folks all over the planet are becoming kinder to our world. I know how to save the globe. Heck, get all the top scientists in the top scientists in the world together and they can’t even agree on ways to save the world, but they are going to agree that something needs to be done quickly.

Can one person save the Earth? No, but one person and another and another and so on can reserve it. So, why not be one of those people.

Be Green for the Good of Our Planet

We all should hold our government and big industries to their part in initiating green action. Industries absolutely need to stop polluting. Government wants to support clean alternative energy. Communities all need to work on every level to promote waste reduction. People can make massive gains toward a greener and cleaner world.

Do any of us expect regimes, communities, and industries to modify overnight? No. Don’t beat yourself up if you aren’t making some of these changes to your lifestyle overnight.

Anything you do to decrease the amount of the Earth’s resources that you use helps to reduce consumption helping you to guide a more sustainable life.

One of the simplest, yet most useful, paths to help our Earth is to buy items with less packaging. Look for the double rolls package. If each this, the savings in packaging would be astronomic. The energy that companies use to create that packaging might be cut in half and the world would breathe a little easier.

Recycle the toilet roll cardboard tubes and, when you open the package of toilet tissue, just slit it on the top and then use the empty package as a liner in a small trashcan.

You may use the cold water for drinking water or to water plants, but allowing it to go down the drain is not helpful to the environment. This is a straightforward way to be kind to our planet.

Remember, it’s up to all of us to help create a new green earth. Little things that we do on a daily basis can help ensure the survival of a new green earth for generations to come.

Recycling saves energy as well as natural resources. Examples of things that are often recycled are glass, plastic, newspapers, aluminum cans, used motor oil, and batteries. Old newspapers could be made into simple home decors if you know how to be creative. Plastic jars could be turned to beautiful vases. Old jeans could be turned to an organizer or a rug. These are just few of the things which can be turned into useful things when recycled.

     

    Lessening the amount resources that are consumed, using only the amount that is needed and looking for alternatives that will lessen our use will surely contribute a lot in saving our resources.Environmental conservation should be prioritize in order to fully enjoy its purpose, we should do something right now while it is not yet late to do so.
