Messages In A Bottle

Messages In A Bottle

There’s something about messages in a bottle that make them very sentimental, sacred, and mysterious at the same time. This may not appeal to everybody but to people who do not mind going a little sentimental from time to time, making messages in a bottle makes a good pastime. These messages are the written evidence of people’s feelings and sentiments that they choose not to tell anyone.

If you want to make your own messages in a bottle, here is a step-by-step guide to help you.

Get a bottle. You can use either plastic or glass. But if you want something more realistic, pick a wine or beer bottle.

Clean and wash the bottle thoroughly. Pour a mixture of warm water and dish soap into your bottle. Cover it with a cork or with your hand. Shake the bottle up and down for a few minutes. Then, start rolling a towel into a rod then stick it in. When done, position it upside down so that all excess liquid can pour out.

Make your message. People have different reasons for making messages in a bottle. Whatever your purpose is, avoid revealing something too personal. Instead of putting your entire address, put your PO Box number instead. This will prevent you from being tracked down by the stranger who gets the bottle. For security purposes, avoid disclosing contact information. Instead, you can write down things that you love to do, things that you hate the most, your dreams, your frustrations, etc. When you’re done, roll up your paper tightly before putting it inside the bottle. You can use a tape or a rubber band

Put the bottle inside a plastic bag. This will keep the bottle from getting wet. Some even choose to layer it with plastic. To make things easier, simply find a clear plastic. Ensure that your paper is safe and not wet.

Let your bottle float. Before finally letting it float on the sea, drop it in the bath tub for testing. Ensure that the cover or the cork is tightly closed.

Even if you’re not at the beach, you can still send your secrets to the sea. Beachtown is an online game on Facebook that gives you the chance to recreate a virtual world of the beach – without living the comforts of your home. Through the Beachtown game, you can send your messages in a bottle – in just a click.

Natural Head Lice Treatments

Natural Head Lice Treatments

It’s a parent’s worst nightmare: your child comes home from school or day care scratching his head. The instant feeling of being “dirty” creeps into your thoughts, but even the cleanest of children get head lice. There are the traditional chemical kits that one can get at the corner drugstore to kill lice, but many come with risks to the health and well-being of your child. There can be dangers if the products are left on too long or used too often. The good news is there are natural remedies available that can do the job just as well.

Mayonnaise

An unrefrigerated, new jar of mayonnaise is one natural remedy for head lice. One handful, or more if your child has long hair, should be worked in thoroughly. It is important to be sure to cover every inch, including the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Cover the head with a plastic shower cap. The mayonnaise should be left on for two hours. It will smother the lice and developed eggs. After removing the shower cap, throw it away and wash your hands. Shampoo the child’s hair thoroughly. You may need to repeat shampooing twice or more to thoroughly clean the hair.

Vaseline

Vaseline is a great substitute if you don’t have a new jar of Mayonnaise available. Once again, handfuls should be worked into the scalp and cover every inch of hair. It is best to leave the Vaseline on, covered with a shower cap overnight. Vaseline is a little more difficult to get out and the process is a bit longer. You will need to begin by covering the head in baby oil, then squeeze out as much as possible. You will need to wash your child’s hair up to three times. It is recommended that Dawn dish soap be used in place of a regular shampoo along with hot water. Be sure the temperature of the water remains safe and does not the burn the child. With each wash, leave the dish soap on a few minutes to allow it to work properly.

Natural Lice Shampoo

You can create your own natural lice shampoo that will safely remove lice and nits. Begin with Pure Olive Carrier Oil, usually about five teaspoons. Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil, Lavender Oil, Peppermint Oil, and Eucalyptus can all be added. It is best to use about five drops each. Pure Coconut Carrier Oil can be substituted for the Olive Oil. Adding a few drops of regular shampoo, work your natural lice shampoo into the hair and leave on for about an hour. It’s best, again, to use a shower cap to avoid oily dripping. A nit comb, which you can purchase at your local drugstore, is much easier to use on the oily hair.

How To Give Your Refrigerator A Good Once A Month Cleaning

How To Give Your Refrigerator A Good Once A Month Cleaning

I must admit, cleaning out my refrigerator and giving it a good cleaning once a month is one of my least favorite household chores. However, if you get organized and get into a routine when doing it, it should become easier.

Cleaning Supplies Needed:

2 Buckets
Hot Water
Mild Hand washing Dish Soap
Clean Sponge
1 box of baking soda

The first thing you need to do is fill up your kitchen sink with warm soapy water and clean off your kitchen countertops. Remove all food and beverage items from your refrigerator and place on your countertop. Turn your appliance off . Remove racks, trays and drawers, place them into the sink to soak.

Fill up your clean bucket with semi-hot water and hand dishwashing soap. Using a clean sponge, wipe down the inside of your refrigerator, being careful to not slop water all over the place. If needed, use a plastic scouring pad to remove any stuck on food debris. Using a clean wet sponge or damp cloth, go over the inside of your refrigerator with plain water, just to rinse any remaining soap. Once you are done scrubbing the inside, take a clean cotton towel and dry it out.

Your next stop is to scrub down your racks, trays and drawers that have been soaking in the sink. Use a plastic scouring pad if needed to remove stubborn food debris. Rinse with clean water and set aside to air dry.

Fill up your bucket again with hot soapy water and scrub down the outside of your refrigerator…don’t forget to get the top. Take a clean damp sponge over it to rinse any soap that you left behind and dry with a clean cotton towel.

Place your racks, trays and drawers back inside your refrigerator. Turn the power back on. Take a clean and wet dishcloth and wipe down any containers or jars that might have sticky food debris on them. You want to really check out those sticky condiment bottles and jars. Place all your food and beverage items back into your refrigerator.

Now that it’s all clean, partially open a fresh box of baking soda and place inside on your middle rack, this will help to keep odors to the minimum.

I personally like to give my refrigerator an overall inside and out cleaning once a month. If you have a large family, you might have to do it more often. If you find that you need something stronger than just hot soapy water, I recommend a mixture of vinegar and water (1 cup of white vinegar mixed with 1 1/2 gallons of water.)

Outdoor Cooking While Rafting and Camping

Outdoor Cooking While Rafting and Camping

Cooking outdoors is a very easy task with a little preparation and planning. If you are planning a rafting or camping trip, there are a few things to remember before you head out to the wilderness, and a few things that can turn a great riverside camp meal into a tantalizing, mouthwatering treat.

First, check your cooking equipment and make sure it is clean and well organized before heading outdoors. Include common utensils and equipment like spatula, turner, large serving spoons, knives, forks, spoons, plates, bowls, cups, coffee pot, cooking pots, pans, (preferably cast iron skillet and Dutch oven), lids, and plastic bags. Utensils can be stored separately in plastic Ziploc bags or long, thin plastic containers with lids. Stack cups inside bowls and pots and pans to utilize all areas of space and remember, you can stack upside down too! Once the tools of the trade are collected, be sure that your cook stove is clean and all working parts are present, including propane, regulator, briquettes, matches or lighter. A few other essentials to include in the cook tubs are pot holders or gloves, foil, cutting board, clean dish towels and scrubbers, dish soap, garbage bags, bleach and a flashlight.

Secondly, plan a menu for each meal of each day that you will be cooking outside. It is easiest to plan the menu by days and meals. For example, Day 1: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks; Day 2: breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks, etc. Once you have your menu planned you can easily make the list of ingredients that go into each meal or snack. Break the list into categories like meats, dairy, fruits, vegetables, dry goods and so on, until you have a complete list of supplies you need to pack. This list can also double as a shopping guide. Perishable items like meats should be frozen ahead of time and packed together in a cooler along with other items that need to be kept cold like milk or cheese. Be sure to pack frozen water bottles, or recycled juice bottles full of frozen water to keep ice chest temperatures cold. It is also a good idea to keep a small thermometer in the cooler so that you know temperatures are appropriate to prevent food spoilage. Crushed ice is added after everything else is packed into the cooler, and it is best to pack drinks in a cooler separate from the perishables cooler.

Now that everything is prepared and organized, a few other pantry items are pertinent to note. Add to the dry goods staples items such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, sugar in a mason jar with screwed down lid, an additional empty pint sized mason jar with lid, vanilla flavoring, other favorite herbs and spices including cinnamon and nutmeg, Pam, or your favorite brand of non stick cooking spray, tea, coffee and hot cocoa. These items can fit into a small storage tub with a lid and labeled as Preferred Pantry! In the cold cooler, be sure to add heavy whipped cream in a mason jar with lid, butter, milk and half and half.

Next comes the cooking. Take the time to organize the camp kitchen. Set up a hand washing station with water, pump soap and clean towel. Unpack tools and utensils so they are easy to reach, yet discretely out of the way. Prepare the garbage/recycle station before you start to cook. If you are using a small grill, set it up and check to make sure it works, and that you have placed it in a well ventilated area. Open coolers as little as possible to keep things cold. As the cooking begins, remember you are working at a slower pace than the stove at home. If using a campfire to cook, smoke will enhance and flavor meats and grilled vegetables with an unbelievably delightful flavor. When food finishes cooking, transfer to a plate and cover with a lid or aluminum foil to retain heat and flavor.

Finally, an impromptu treat of Same Day Cobbler is made possible by the supplies included in the pre-trip preparations. In August, there are many ripe blackberries. Pick a quart or two of the wild berries. Rinse and place the berries into a Dutch oven. Sprinkle with sugar and use about one tablespoon of butter and dot the berries. If berries aren’t available, pack a can or two of peaches. After that, mix up the cobbler topping using the pancake mix you brought along. Add a few tablespoons of sugar to the mix, and mix with milk until t it is the consistency of a drop biscuit. Drop the cobbler dough on top of the berries or peaches. Sprinkle the top with a teaspoon full of sugar, put on the lid and bake in a Dutch Oven until you can see and smell the steam escaping from the top. While the cobbler is baking, fill a mason jar two-thirds full of heavy whipping cream. Add a dash of sugar, a touch of vanilla and screw the lid on tight. Now it is time for more fun! Pass the jar of whipping cream around the camp fire. As each person shakes it, watch your family and friends make whipped cream! When the Same Day Cobbler has finished cooking, serve with a little whipped cream. Enjoy!

Cooking outdoors can be very enjoyable and delicious. It contributes to the relaxing rhythm of an outdoor adventure and invites others to share in the work, or keep you company while you are cooking. Be sure to clean up, wipe down and store all unused food. Outdoor cooking is an integral element of rafting and camping. It enriches the experience, slows the pace and enhances the flavors of food. Enjoy what comes along and be sure to share the joy of cooking at the camp fire!
