Carton recyclingTwo thousand and thirteen marked a year of significant expansion of carton recycling. Thanks to collaborative industry efforts and support from communities nationwide, 48 percent of U.S. households now have access to carton recycling. Meeting the Carton Council of North America’s goals for 2013, access increased by 16.4 percent and expanded from 43 to 45 U.S. states.

The Carton Council, a group of carton manufacturers united to deliver long-term collaborative solutions in order to divert valuable cartons from the landfill, credits this exceptional growth to voluntary private and public collaboration that includes industry companies and organizations, recycling facilities and local governments. Since 2009, the Carton Council has focused efforts on building infrastructure and improving access to carton recycling nationwide. At that time, just 18 percent of U.S. households had access to carton recycling. Currently, 56.1 million U.S. households have access to recycle cartons.

“We are proud of the progress made in 2013,” says Jason Pelz, vp, environment, Tetra Pak North America, and vp of recycling projects for the Carton Council of North America. “Carton recycling access has increased 160 percent in just four years. School-aged children are learning about the importance of recycling their milk and juice cartons as part of their larger contribution to the environment, and are then taking these lessons home to their parents. Citizens, who are buying more food and drinks in cartons than ever before, now have more ways to recycle these containers. Communities are treating cartons as ‘must recycle’ items. All of these are examples of the huge strides made, working together in a collaborative way.”

A number of large-sized communities added carton recycling in 2013, including Tampa, FL.; Memphis, TN; and Columbus, OH. In total, 7.9 million households gained access in 2013. As more communities have expanded their recycling programs to include cartons, the Carton Council has also launched a series of comprehensive public education campaigns to get the word out to local residents. The campaigns have included direct mail, television public service announcements, advertisements in local newspapers, and community event outreach, along with online digital ads and social media activities.

Twin Cities, Minn.

“We expect access to continue to expand in 2014 as more recycling and waste management industry professionals, as well as local governments, recognize the value of cartons and the ease by which they can be added to their community’s recycling program.” Pelz says. “We also want to make more Americans aware that cartons are recyclable and will continue our efforts on broadening awareness in 2014.”

Additionally, the industry has been taking notice of the strides made to improve access to carton recycling:

• In August, the California Product Stewardship Council (CPSC) awarded the Carton Council with the 2013 Bow and Arrow Award for Coalition Building to recognize efforts in building strong, effective partnerships not only between competitors in carton manufacturing, but also across the entire recycling supply chain with recycling professionals, sorting facilities and paper mills.

• The Carton Council was also recognized by the State of Texas Alliance for Recycling (STAR) in November with its 2013 Outstanding Recycling Partnership Award.

Made mainly from paper, a renewable resource, lightweight and compact in design and with a low carbon footprint, cartons have proven to be a sustainable packaging solution that is growing in use for a variety of liquid and food products. Including cartons as an accepted material in every curbside recycling program offers a better, more cost-efficient option than other proposed recovery solutions.

The Carton Council currently has a campaign designed to help counties and municipalities, as well as recyclers, bring carton recycling to their residents. For more information, visit www.CartonOpportunities.org

Dinner Blessings

The housewife invited 2 couple and their children for dinner one night. As they get ready to eat, the housewife asks her son, “Would you like to say blessings”?

“I don’t know what to say”, the boy replies.

“Just say what you hear what your mother says”, replied the mother.

The boy bowed his head and said, “Lord, why on earth did I invite two 2 couples and their kids for dinner”?

BUY LOCAL

Where possible we should buy locally grown foods. As a rule your food is fresher, better flavor, picked within a day of your purchase. Local produce more likely has a higher nutrient content than store-bought produce that has spent time on a transport truck and warehouse. Further farmers who sell directly to local customers receive the full value for their product, can sell cheaper, as there is less cost to processing, transportation, packing, warehouse etc.

This is the time of the year for ice; snowstorms, (with power failure) floods and fire, depending on what part of the country you live.  Below are some helpful tips to keep your food and you safe.

Food Information When Power Out

Have Food on hand that don’t require refrigeration and can be eaten cold or heated on the outdoor grill.  Food boxed or canned milk, water, and canned goods should be part of a planned emergency food supply.  Also, ready-to-use baby formula for infants and pet food.

Always keep meat, poultry, fish, and eggs refrigerated at or below 40 °F and frozen food at or below 0 °F. This may be difficult when the power is out.  Coolers are a great help for keeping food cold if the power will be out for more than 4 hours.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas. It is produced whenever you burn any fuel—such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal. Generators, pressure washers, other gasoline powered tools and charcoal grills give off high levels of CO. This can build up quickly in closed spaces or partially enclosed spaces—within minutes. Never use gas-powered tools inside—that includes your basement or garage.

Get a battery-powered CO detector to alert you to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide in your home.

Please remember: you CAN NOT prevent build-up of carbon monoxide by using an exhaust fan—or opening your garage doors or windows. Again, never use gas-powered equipment inside.

Be alert to the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning! If you or anyone else in your home feels sick, dizzy or weak—Think carbon monoxide—CO! Get out of the house and seek prompt medical help.

FOOD EXPOSED TO FIRE- HEAT

Discard food that has been near a fire. Food exposed to fire can be damaged by the heat of the fire, smoke fumes, and chemicals used to fight the fire. Food in cans or jars may appear to be okay, but the heat from a fire can activate food spoilage bacteria. If the heat is extreme, the cans or jars themselves can split or rupture, rendering the food unsafe.

One of the most dangerous elements of a fire is sometimes not the fire itself, but toxic fumes released from burning materials. Discard any raw food or food in permeable packaging—cardboard, plastic wrap, screw-topped jars, bottles, etc.—stored outside the refrigerator.

Food stored in refrigerators or freezers can also become contaminated by fumes. The refrigerator seal isn’t airtight and fumes can get inside. Chemicals used to fight the fire contain toxic materials and can contaminate food and cookware.

Food that is exposed to chemicals should be thrown away—the chemicals cannot be washed off the food. This includes food stored at room temperature, such as fruits and vegetables, as well as food stored in permeable containers like cardboard and screw-topped jars and bottles.

In Flood Zone?

If your location is in a possible flood zone plan your food storage on shelves that will be safely out of the way of contaminated water. Coolers are a great help for keeping food cold if the power will be out for more than 4 hours.

Discard any food that is not in a waterproof container if there is any chance that it has come into contact with floodwater. Food containers that are not waterproof include those with screw caps, snap lids, pull tops, and crimped caps. Also, discard cardboard juice/milk/baby formula boxes and home canned foods if they have come in contact with floodwater, because they cannot be effectively cleaned and sanitized.

Inspect canned foods and discard any food in damaged cans. Can damage is shown by swelling, leakage, punctures, holes, fractures, extensive thoroughly wash countertops with soap and water, using hot water if available. Rinse and then sanitize them by applying a solution of 1 tablespoon of unscented, liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of drinking water (or the cleanest, clearest water available). Allow air-drying.

RESPONSIBLE DRINKING
It should be known that like any other drug, addiction is a potential hazard.  Excess of alcohol will affect organs such as the brain, heart, and liver.

If you’re having a party provide food with your drinks.  You can also offer non-alcoholic such as fruit, soft drinks.

BAR MIXES
Hoots Mon.
1 jigger Scotch Whiskey.
½ jigger Lillet.
½ jigger Sweet Vermouth.
Stir with ice and strain.

Apple Cocktail
½ ounce applejack
½ ounce apple cider
¼ ounce gin
¼ ounce brandy
Shake with ice cubes.  Strain into chilled cocktail glass.

Non-Alcoholic Drink

Fresh Fruit Punch
8 ounces each of orange juice, pineapple juice, and grapefruit
juice.
1 bottle ginger ale.  Sugar to taste.
Combine the juices with the sugar.  Stir until the sugar is
dissolved and refrigerate.  Add the ginger ale plus chunks of ice before serving.

Start Saving Money – Find Extra Money in Your Budget

Start Saving Money – Find Extra Money in Your Budget

The first thing my clients tell me is that they are living paycheck to paycheck and there is no room in their budget to save money. My response to them is that there is always room; you just need to know where to look for it.

If you were to write down everything you spend money on in one month, you would be surprised to see how many wasteful things that you buy. Buying one less Starbucks a week is a savings of almost a month. Renting movies instead of going to the theatre will likely save you a good . And getting dinner for 2 from the frozen foods isle instead of your favorite restaurant can save you up to a month.

It is these types of lifestyle changes that some financial counselors will encourage you NOT to do. They will tell you that you do not have enough self control to make decisions like those. I, on the other hand, encourage anyone who wants to save money to take a close look at where they are throwing money away on unnecessary luxuries that they could do without. And then I ask you to do something even more daring.

I dare you to put the money that you would have spent on a new hair color, coffee, or dinner for two and literally put that cash in jar. Then hide the jar in a safe place where only you or your spouse knows where it is. Do that every time you would spend money on something you can live without. This method has so many benefits to it, so let me explain some of them:

1.) It gets you started on using cash instead of credit cards. It is harder to hand over a twenty dollar bill than it is to give the clerk your plastic card. You will start to see the difference in spending when you work with only cash.

2.) You will start thinking about every purchase in a new light. You can start off by limiting the amount of drinks you buy each month, but then keep going and limit something else you buy every month, like a new DVD. Your mindset will change into more of a frugal shopper.

3.) You will start getting excited about saving! When you see your jar starting to fill up you will get excited about not spending money on something so that you can keep adding it to your savings jar.

Once you have enough self control developed, then move that jar from under your bed and into a savings account with a high interest rate. Banks may seem like an iffy place to keep your money these days, but remember that your money is FDIC insured up to 0k.

Comparing Bottled Water To Tap Water

Comparing Bottled Water To Tap Water

We all need water. Most experts estimate that the average body needs about two quarts of water a day. Until relatively recently, almost everyone in the country received their water either from the tap or from public or office water fountains. And then, suddenly in the late nineties, bottled water became a growth industry and companies begin to bottle it for mega-profits.

These days, people all across the U.S. are cumulatively spending billions of dollars each year on the buying of bottled water drinks. Why are they drinking bottled water? For a variety of reasons. Some drink it simply because they don’t care for the taste of their tap water. Some drink bottled water as a healthier alternate to many of the numerous sugar based drinks on the market. And others still, do it because they believe that it is healthier than tap water. Whatever the reason, so many people are buying bottled water these days that it has become the most sold bottled product in the country.

Those who drink predominantly tap water have an advantage over bottled water in that they know that their local water utility is acting under the direction of the EPA to test the water to ensure that all dangerous contaminants are kept to below acceptable levels. In addition, municipalities distribute to their customers, at least once a year, a water quality report which details the state of the water quality. On the other hand, those who drink bottled water, have no central place which they can contact to determine the water quality of the water which they are buying.

The EPA sets standards for water supplied to the public from municipal sources. The FDA sets water standards for bottled water supplied throughout the country, although there are certain exceptions as to when these rules apply. Even though the FDA standards for bottled water are based on the EPA standards, there can be significant differences with the EPA standards generally considered to be more stringent. As long as the water quality meets either the FDA or EPA standards, however, the water is considered safe to drink.

Many people try to discourage the use of bottled water for a number of reasons. But one of the main reasons is that most plastic bottles are not reusable. And even the plastic bottles that are re-useable, in reality are not reused, because most of them are tossed away with the regular garbage. The result is that millions of pounds of plastic end up clogging landfills across the country.

To combat this assault on the environment, many environmentalists suggest that if you want the convenience of having portable water that you carry your own. There are many convenient bottle sized products on the market in which you can carry water or other liquids. Some even have built-in or attachable filters which can purify your water. The best ones are made of substances other than plastic, such as stainless steel, where you don’t have to be concerned about the contaminants from the container leaching into your water.

Throughout the years, a consistent result from has emerged from the studies performed by independent entities comparing the qualities of bottled water and tap water. Municipal water from the tap is usually just as good as that from bottled water, and often better.

How to care for a stainless steel water bottle

How to care for a stainless steel water bottle

Stainless steel water bottles are durable, non-leaching and non-reactive to most drinks. Most are designed to last for years and many are designed to provide a lifetime of service. A few are even rugged enough to be placed in campfires and used for heating soup or beverages. Still, there are some things that can damage even a top quality bottle. Some of these are common knowledge items and some are things that people might never think of. For the record, here are some tips to help make any water bottle last as long as it can.

First, get a sleeve for the outside of the bottle. Yes the graphics on the outside of the bottle are beautiful, but normal wear and tear will soon scratch that pretty finish. To make it last, get either a neoprene or insulated cover made from another material like quilted cotton or nylon. There are a couple of added benefits from covers: they act as insulators to help keep beverages hot or cold longer, and second, they often come with a shoulder strap that makes carrying some of the larger bottles much easier.

The Second tip is to never try to freeze anything inside the bottle. Many of us are used to putting plastic bottles into the freezer to produce a very cold beverage. Stainless steel water bottles are different and much less forgiving of the freezer. Water or other fluids will expand when frozen and that expansion can be enough to burst a metal bottle. In fact, a double-walled bottle may show no outward signs of bursting, but may have suffered an internal rupture that would allow fluids to enter the space between the walls and thereby render the bottle useless.

The Third Tip is exactly the opposite of number two. Never put a metal bottle into the microwave. Again, all of us are used to dealing with plastic bottles and ceramic or glass cups, so this is a precaution that many might not think of, especially if the bottle is surrounded by a insulated jacket that hides the metal. While some stainless steel bottles are rated to handle an open flame, for use on a campfire, none are made for the microwave.

The Fourth and last Tip is one for cleaning. Stainless steel bottles can be cleaned using a standard denture tablet, or a bit of baking soda and vinegar. The warning here is to remember to leave the bottle uncapped after placing these types of foaming products inside. The odds are that nothing would happen to the bottle, but anyone removing the stopper after the contents had foamed and pressurized might get a messy and potentially dangerous surprise.

All of us want to reduce our reliance on plastics, and with the recent scares about chemicals leaching into food and beverages from certain plastic products, many of us are finding that stainless steel water bottles are an excellent choice to protect both ourselves and our families. But these bottles aren’t like plastic ones, and they require just a tiny bit more care.

Insulated Stainless Steel Bottles And Kids? Stainless Steel Bottles

Insulated Stainless Steel Bottles And Kids? Stainless Steel Bottles

Drinking out of plastic bottles may not only be unsafe for one’s health, but also harmful for the environment since millions of these bottles end up being thrown away, ultimately clogging landfills. So, one way to help save the environment as well as money is by using stainless steel water bottles instead of plastic. If you are looking for a way to drink safely as well as be able to transport drinks without using plastic, then stainless steel is the way to go.

Kids’ stainless steel bottles are ideal for lunch bags, day camp, field trips and many other activities.  Instead of giving your child a plastic bottle filled with water, it is safer to use a stainless steel bottle for water.  Reports have recently come out citing studies that show BPA, a chemical in many plastics, is unsafe, especially for children whose brains and bodies are developing. So, when you want to give your child a transportable drink, use a stainless steel bottle and have peace of mind knowing that unsafe substances are not leaching into their drinks from a plastic bottle, especially during warm weather.

If you like to take water or another beverage with you, use an insulated stainless steel bottle instead of a plastic container. You’ll be able to keep your drink cold or hot, your choice. An insulated stainless steel bottle is very practical, easy to clean and can be used for many years, so it makes good economic sense to buy a good quality steel bottle instead of repeatedly spending money on single use bottles.

You can find these bottles at online outlets in a variety of sizes and styles.

One way to save the environment as well as money is to use an insulated stainless steel bottle  for drinking purposes over plastic.  You can even get kids stainless steel bottle products when you go to Eco Vessel.
