The present invention, however, is not limited to such a bottle, but it can also be applied to single-walled containers which are provided with a cap and a pump.For operating a bottle of the kind in question, it must be ensured that the grip member of the pump, which in the vertical direction is displaceably seated in the upper opening of the cap, does not “lift off” the cap from the bottle upon its actuation (i.e., when being pressed down) for whenever, as is often the case in practice, the grip member is not pressed by the user exactly in the vertical direction (i.e., in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the bottle inwards), a lateral force acts on the cap that causes a torque which may lead to a detachment of the cap from the bottle, so that the pump is no longer operative. The risk that the cap is “lifted off” is further enhanced in cases where the grip member has an enlarged grip surface for comfortable handling, the grip surface projecting beyond the shaft of the grip member which is displaceably received in the covering cap, so that the above-mentioned torque is created almost automatically by the depression of the grip member, such torque tending to lift off the covering cap from the bottle on the side opposite to the projecting part of the grip member.

Things you need:

•    Glass bottle Shea butter (deodorized), Cocoa butter, Vitamin E, Beeswax, Heat-proof glass cup
•    Plastic mixing bowl Spatula Small glass or 1 small glass jar or Pyrex bowl for mixing or tin jar for storage.
•    8-15 drops essential oil (available from most health food stores.)
•    1 container (preferably glass, ceramic or stone but plastic is acceptable)
•    1 straw (or similar object)

The ingredients can be purchased from online beauty wholesalers. In some cases, they can also be found at local food stores. Mix and match different essential oils to create a customized scent. You must take care in when handling the glass cup and melting the beeswax and butters.

First you can pour about 3 to 5 drops of each essential oil into a small glass bottle. Add more or less based on which essential oils you want as the top notes, middle notes and base notes in your solid perfume. The more drops you add, the stronger the scent of the essential oil in your finished perfume. Allow the oils to mellow in the bottle for 1 to 2 days. This enhances the natural fragrance of each oil, making it stronger. After that Place a half tablespoon of shea butter, half a teaspoon of cocoa butter, half a teaspoon of vitamin E (or one liquid capsule) and one tablespoon of beeswax in a heat-proof glass cup, then place the cup in a hot water bath until the butter and wax have melted. Remove the cup from the hot water bath.

Add essential oils from step 1 to the butter/wax mixture. Stir the mixture with a spatula to blend the oils and waxes thoroughly. Finally pour the finished mixture into a glass or tin jar. An old, empty solid perfume container is best if you have one. Allow the solid perfume mixture to cool and harden inside the container before use.

How to Make Homemade Wine

To make homemade wines with the recipes and ingredients here all one needs is a gallon-size glass bottle, a saucepan and a polyethylene pail. Make certain to use polyethylene as some plastics are not suitable. Do not use aluminum, copper,

or enamel vessels to make your homemade wine with.

Sterilization is mandatory for all utensils, bottles and corks, especially corks. One should use commercialy available plastic corks until you know how to properly sterilize natural corks.

Ordinarily, baker’s yeast and white granulated sugar are used by the average homemade wine maker. A special wine yeast and invert sugar makes the best wine possible.

Wine yeast is capable of producing eighteen per cent of alcohol by volume (32 proof), against the fourteen per cent of bakers’ yeast.

Starting what is called a ‘nucleus ferment’ornutrient. A small jar will do for this. About a 1/2 cup of water and a teaspoonful of sugar are boiled together for a minute and then allowed to cool. This is then put into a sterilized jar and the yeast added in whatever form it is obtained.

Allow to set for 3 days covered with plastic wrap

and rubberband.

Preparing the fruit: Various types of wild yeast and bacteria are on the fruit naturally and must be dealt with.Our method, known as the ‘sulphiting’ method, does this. For more detailed information on “sulphiting” go to

How to make homemade wine:

Crush the fruit by hand in the poly pail and pour on one quart of distilled water. Mix well. Crush one campden tablet and dissolve the power in 1/2 cup of warm water and mix with pulp. Leave the mixture for 1 or 2 hours. A little discoloring may happen.

After this, take 1/3 of the sugar

to be used and boil this for 1 minute in 3 pints of water. Allow this syrup to cool and then stir into the pulp. Then add the yeast (or nutrient) and ferment for 7 days.

After 7 days, strain the pulp through fine cloth and wring out as dry as you can. Put the strained homemade wine into a gallon jar and discard pulp. Then boil another 1/3 of the sugar in one pint of water for 1 minute and when cooled add it to the rest. Plug the neck of the jar with cotton wool or fit a fermentation lock and continue to ferment the homemade wine in a warm place for a further 10 days.

At this stage, pour the homemade wine into the poly pail leaving as much deposit in the jar as you can. Clean out the jar, sterilize it and return the homemade wine to this. Boil the remaining 1/3 of the sugar for 1 minute in 1 pint of water. When this has cooled, add it to the

rest. Refit the lock or plug the neck of the jar with fresh cotton wool.

After this, the homemade wine should be left in a warm place until all fermentation has ceased.

Clearing: it is usual to have a brilliantly clear homemade wine a month before fermentation has ceased so patience is required here. After all fermentation has ceased, siphon the clear homemade wine (if not yet crystal clear) into another jar leaving the deposit behind. Then when the homemade wine is finally crystal clear it should be siphoned into bottles and corked.

To get the maximum alcohol and to get total fermentation the ideal temperature at which to keep a ‘must’ is between 65-70 degrees F.

Fully ripe fruit is essential if we hope to make the besthomemade wine.

CHERRY WINE: (A Delightful Sweet Wine):8lb. black cherries, 7pts. water, 3 1/2lb. sugar (or 4lb.

invert), all-purpose wine yeast or Bordeaux yeast, nutrient.

PLUM WINE: (Port Style):Dark red, fully ripe fruits must be used. 10lb. plums,7pts. water, 3 1/2lb. sugar (or 4lb. invert), port yeast, nutrient.

GRAPE WINE: Homemade grape wine is much more difficult and requires 20 pounds of grapes so unless you own a vineyard it is not cost effective to make homemade grape wine.After several batches you will get the rhythm of making

homemade wine down to a tee. With further knowledge you will be able to make homemade wines with a strength, clarity, flavour and bouquet of which you will be justly proud.

CPRE Loses Its Bottle?

The countryside pressure group, Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), largely made up of country landowners and the rural ‘well heeled’ has entered the debate, regarding the conservation of natural resources and reduction of litter, through introducing a deposit return scheme on glass and plastic bottles.

The CPRE is calling for a deposit of 15p on bottles up to half a litre and 30p for larger sizes.  They calculate that the saving could save the public sector around £160million per year.

Those like me who are able to recall the ‘good old days’ when many glass drinks bottles could be returned to a local retailer, where you could receive the deposit back paid on the bottle at the time of purchase, may think it a good idea.  There is certainly nothing wrong with trying to introduce a deposit system that would reduce the quantity of glass and plastic land filled by more effective recycling.  In addition, any scheme that would reduce the quantity of litter on the streets is also welcome.

The CPRE are however stuck in the post war days and are viewing the scheme through ‘rose tinted glasses’, reflecting by the social class and age group of its membership.

I am not sure how CPRE arrived at its conclusion that £160million per year (equivalent to £7 per household per year) could be saved from implementing their suggestions.  It may be by analyzing the annual cost to the tax payer from land fill of glass and plastic bottle waste?

CPRE suggest that the deposit would be payable when the drinks bottle is dropped off at an “authorised site.”  However, there is already an effective glass bottle recycling system in place throughout the UK, where the public are able to take glass bottles for recycling.

If the CPRE are suggesting  that the thousands of local bring recycling sites be used as ‘authorised sites’, then they would need to be manned, to prevent unscrupulous individuals using the recycling centre as a source of income, by taking bottles elsewhere to claim deposit.  The sites would also need to be fenced.

If more centralized ‘authorised sites’ are used, then it would be necessary to close the already effective glass bring recycling network in place now, from which many small rural communities enjoy a ‘recycling payment’ from their local authority for providing the facility.

Most drinks bottles these days are made from light but durable plastic.  Providing authorized sites to collect these bottles makes no sense environmentally.  The energy used to collect and then deliver plastic bottles to a reprocessing site,  would exceed the energy embedded making the product in the first place.

Although the intentions of the CPRE are laudable and in an ideal world we would have zero waste and litter, the CPRE membership themselves are likely to object to planning application for ‘authorised site’ if proposed in the countryside.

After spending many years working within the constrains of public service, where I experienced the steady infiltration of the ‘thought police’ and the P.C brigade into daily life, the time has now come for me to say it exactly as I see it, without fear of being dismissed or ostracized by colleagues for my views.

The blog will very likely anger some readers and will probably not go down particularly well with many of the intelligentsia, likely to be angered by what I have to say.

I tend to take a very pragmatic view of life, which in these days of political correctness, does tend to upset some people. I do not categorise myself as having extreme political views along left or right lines, although some of my views will probably be considered to be extreme to some.  I would simply say that I like to take a logical, practical and reasoned approach to life and my opinions reflect this philosophy.

    Most bottled water comes in plastic bottles and when stored in hot or warm temperatures, chemicals may be leached into the water. Storing the water into the garage or near gas fumes could affect the smell and taste of the water. Many people leave bottled water out in the car at high or low temperature facilitating the materials from the plastic to go into the water. Some people also use plastic juice bottles with tap water to carry around. It is better using safer container or simply glass bottle. For all those health risks and other considerations as well, it’s better to filter your tap water. Water filters are relatively inexpensive these days and for the best benefits, filters need to be changed frequently.

    ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF BOTTLED WATER

    With bottled water comes a whole lot of environmental impact that can be avoided with a turn of the faucet. While we struggle to cut down on our consumption of fossils fuels, water bottled increases them. Virgin petroleum is used to make plastic bottles; the more bottles we use, the more virgin petroleum is needed to crate new bottles. And more, fossil fuels are burned to fill the bottles and distribute them. Even more, it is not just bottled water, but juices, soft drinks and other beverages packed in plastic that had to this waste and the fuel used for shipping bottles.

    According to a study of the Oregon State University, it takes about 273 billion litre of water a year, worldwide, just to make empty bottles. Treating and filtering tap water for bottling creates even more waste. It takes about two litres of water to make every litre you see on stores shelves. Also, it is estimated that less than half of water bottles ever make it to a second life. The y are tossed on beaches, roadsides and into landfills, where they could remain for a thousand years. It is time to stop that waste for good. Take action and get a filter right now to save the future our planet. Everyone should stand up to stop this unacceptable waste. It’s a MUST.
