Ritz-Carlton Moving to “Green” Bottles

Ritz-Carlton Moving to “Green” Bottles

Ritz Carlton’s U.S. and Caribbean hotels (which account for 40 of the chain’s 73 hotels) will stop offering plastic water bottles and will switch to plant-based, biodegradable material for their hotel branded water bottles.  This move towards using an environmentally much friendlier material for water bottles is thought to be the first among hotel chains.

The new bottles are made totally from plants and being all natural can decompose in 30 days in a commercial composting facility.  Alternatively these “green” bottles can be reprocessed and 100 percent remade into new bottles.  The benefits are many including that making one new bottle uses half the fossil fuels of a traditional plastic water bottle, as well as 45 percent less energy, and generates 75 percent less greenhouse gases. The bottles hold water normally without fear they will decompose in front of you or while in the refrigerator.

Lest anyone think that this is largely an empty gesture, Ritz Carlton distributes five million 16 oz. water bottles per year, according to the Marriott owned brand. The positive environmental implications could increase dramatically if all Marriot hotels follow Ritz Carlton’s lead.

Other chains cannot dismiss switching to environmentally friendly water bottles based on cost concerns, since Marriott has announced that the new bottles will cost the same as the old water bottles. Ultimately, the cost of such bottles will likely be lowered as they become more common. As with many environmental advances, the initial cost is a reason for concern, but once they become the standard, many times the price comes down to equal or even lower than the item they replace.

8 Eco-Friendly Lunch Packing Tips

8 Eco-Friendly Lunch Packing Tips

Today I was in a local toy store and saw a lunch box for children with a sticker price of …honestly, what’s that all about?  Do people really pay for a lunch box?  I don’t care if that lunch box lasts me all year; I’m still not going to pay for it!

Truth be told, if we all take a step back in our own homes, we will find a few different options we can use right there to pack lunches every day; we just need to get creative!

FYI-follow these tips for money saving and eco- friendly lunch packing tips:

1-Reuse baskets, tin cookie containers, gift bags or small coolers as lunch boxes.

2-Purchase small ice packs to keep lunches cool and from spoiling OR freeze water in a plastic water bottle, leaving ½” head room, and use to keep lunch cool.  The extra bonus is the ice will be melting and will provide your child with fresh and cool water at lunch.

3-Instead of plastic baggies, purchase wax eco-friendly bags, or reusable nylon snack or sandwich bags.

4-Utilize a small, flat plastic container or Wrap-n-Mat for sandwiches or wraps.

5-Small glass jam jars work really great for everything from cut vegetables to yogurt to trail mix.

6-Send along a cloth napkin for use as napkin and/or placemat.

7-Stainless steel or BPA free plastic water bottles replace the need for juice boxes or sugared drinks.

8-Send a little love note from home in your child’s lunchbox.  If he/she can’t read, a small picture or smiley face will do the trick.

Water Bottles: is your Bottle Safe for Drinking?

Water Bottles: is your Bottle Safe for Drinking?

On the bottom of my water bottle there is a number inside a triangle, what does it mean?

The number inside of the triangle is a plastic identification number representing what chemical was used to make the plastic. For example if you see a 1 that represents PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate) or a 7 represents Polycarbonate (which contains Bisphenol A), which are the two most commonly used chemicals in water bottles. This articles intent is to give a basic overview for #1 and #7 chemicals and is not inclusive by any means. I urge the reader to research each of these chemicals further.

Can I reuse my plastic water bottle?

Water bottles with the #1 (PETE) are for single use only! PETE leaches out into the solution within the second use. The more you reuse bottles made out of PETE the more of the chemical you are ingesting (Aquafina and Dasani are made out of PETE). Number 7 is rather stable in the beginning but with washing and continued use the pores of the plastic begin leaching polycarbonate and the more you wash and refill the more you are ingesting. I recommend not using bottles made with #7 (Nalgene is made with polycarbonate).

What is the health problem associated with chronic exposure to these chemicals?

PETE is thought to possibly be a carcinogen; there have been reported studies to support this claim. I am not yet sold on the exact condition it causes but drinking small amounts of chemicals cannot be good for anyone. Polycarbonate on the other hand is showing health concerns in a variety of ways. Bisphenol A (contained in Polycarbonate) was 1st introduced to the market in the 1930’s as an estrogen for pharmacological use. It is now used in our plastics and has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system, fetus development, cause reproductive abnormalities and has been shown to enhance the growth of human breast cancer cells. These are dis-ease states that everyone should be trying to prevent from occurring.

Are there any bottles that are safe?

Bottles made by SIGG are coated on the inside with resin that have been proven to be resistant to breakdown and do not leach harmful chemicals. These bottles are looked upon as the gold standard when it comes to reusable containers.

What is the Chiropractic connection?

Proper hydration is a part of the detoxifying, cooling and transportation process for every cell in the body. If the water you are consuming is contaminated with chemicals these process will be hindered and dysfunction will follow. Dysfunction in the body comes in the form of headaches, back pain, constipation or if in large enough amounts, even cancer.

Are Portable Water Bottle Filters A Scam?

Are Portable Water Bottle Filters A Scam?

With each passing day, more news stories and scientific reports come out about how bad bottled water is for us. We wound up spending millions for something we usually received for free. ABC News show “20/20” famously sent famous brands of bottled water to a lab and they discovered that the contents were identical to tap water. The plastic bottles are also found to be not biodegradable. So, are portable water bottle filters the same bill of bad goods?

What are They?

Portable water bottle filters are found mostly in sporting goods, camping and RV supply stores. They look just like a usual plastic water bottle – only they have an intricate logo and a small unit inside containing water filtration media. These are sturdy bottles to be used again and again. You definitely don’t want to use these just once, especially since the average price is – and that does not include replacement cartridges.

Many times, portable water bottle filters are made of a plastic that is not derived from hard to decay petroleum but from corn oil or other botanical materials that are biodegradable. Others feature designs that don’t have many problems leaking, which stops any waste of the precious water inside.

Some feature a filtration media that’s in a plastic unit while others are portable ceramic water bottles. The ceramic bottles will usually be more expensive than the plastic, sometimes three or four times as expensive. These bottles will look more like small pumps or fire extinguishers rather than the typical water bottle.

How Safe is the Water?

There are pros and cons to using portable water bottle filters. The pros are that it can filter out dirt, even asbestos and bacteria like salmonella. They also are lightweight and can be easily packed with you. They are also far less expensive than many other kinds of water filtration systems.

But you can’t live on strange bodies of water strained through a portable water bottle filter. For one thing, the bottle only holds about as much water as a soda can. You need to keep refilling all of the time. Also, many dangerous chemicals are much smaller than the filtration media can handle and will slip into your water anyway.

If you are taking a hike, twist your ankle and have to wait a couple of days for help next to a trickling stream, then a portable water bottle filter is better than nothing at all. But for more practical use in camping, you should boil your water and let it cool before drinking it.

Limiting the effects of plastic water bottles: how you can go green and make a difference

Limiting the effects of plastic water bottles: how you can go green and make a difference

You see them everywhere, at the gym, the supermarket, maybe there’s even one sitting on your desk right now. I’m talking, of course, about the ubiquitous plastic water bottle. Americans have had an ongoing love affair with this little innovation, since it was first introduced to us back in the 1960’s. Today, we spend over ,000 every minute on bottled water, that’s 8.6 billion gallons annually. Of course, there is no arguing plastic bottles are convenient but few consider the ecological impact that the 16 oz bottle of mineral water you keep with you at the gym has on the environment.

From 1997 to 2007, sales of bottled water grew by more than tenfold, however the recycling rate of plastic bottles for the same period dropped by 4%. Industry analysts estimate that 1.5 to 2.7 million tons of plastic are used to make plastic for bottled water, each year. For every 2.2 pounds of plastic produced, it takes just over a half gallon of oil: that means that over the course of one year almost 21.4 million barrels of oil are consumed in bottled water production. Coupled with the fact that every plastic bottle actually takes 6.74 times more water to produce it than it can hold, the impact on our environment to produce a single bottle is staggering. While nearly 90 percent of plastic bottles finish their life in landfills – despite the fact that they can be effectively recycled between 20 to 30 times – there is a drive towards reducing this figure by collecting and recycling the plastic for future use into a product called Recycled Polyethylene Terephalate or RPET.

One green manufacturing business is looking to make a difference by taking on two environmental problems at once. Ecozuri, a California based company, has created a line of eco-friendly reusable carrier bags made from a RPET fabric called Repreve. This unique yarn is made from 100% recycled consumer plastic, collected and processed in the U.S., that is converted into a high quality yarn and in turn is spun into an eco-friendly fabric.

Ecozuri offers a line of colorful, chic shopping bags that are at once a fashion statement and a way to show your commitment to keeping the environment safe for us and future generations. Each bag is available in a range of vibrant colors, is machine washable and can hold up 50-pounds.

Clients who purchase from Ecozuri can be sure they are receiving a product that is certified as being produced from 100% recycled post-consumer plastic and, by integrating the reusable bags into their day-to-day shopping habits, they will also be helping to remove the need for an estimated 500 disposable plastic shopping bags per adult each year.

Ecozuri also offers a custom-made factory-direct production program for wholesale purchasers. Using this system, Ecozuri is able to offer its wholesale easily branded, environmentally friendly, chic and colorful bags suitable for all manner of promotional and advertising campaigns with savings over similar programs of between 10 and 25 percent.

Most people hesitate to carry green bags simply because they harbor the misconception that all green products are typically drab looking. However, with the bright, colorful range of environmentally friendly shopping bags and other recycled materials available at Ecozuri, you can save the earth and look cool too!

BPA Free Sports Water Bottles

BPA Free Sports Water Bottles

Bisphenol A (or BPA for short) is an amalgam used in the developing of various plastics. There has been much information in the main stream media about the harm caused by BPA leakage in to the drinking water or food of packages constructed with BPA. BPA is an endocrine interrupter and can impersonate the body’s own hormones which may direct to harmful health effects when consumed in high quantities. Authoritarian bodies have ascertained safety levels for humans, but those safety levels are at present being debated as a result of on-going scientific discoveries.

The research on the consequences of BPA in the human system is very much in their formative years. The Endocrine Society has articulated uneasiness over current human contact to BPA, reporting that BPA emerges to be torrential in amounts in the human body from a multitude of unidentified supplies. Studies done in 2009 on mice have shown that BPA contamination causes long term undesirable reproductive tribulations during prenatal vital periods. Neonatal exposure to BPA also upsets ovarian development, and this is only the tip of the iceberg as ongoing studies are still being conducted. While there is much dispute about their outcomes, do you really want to continue drinking out of perilous plastic water bottles while studies are coming up with the results?

Even if you pay no attention to the propaganda about BPA, these ecological worries are an adequate amount to justify everyone switching from purchasing bottled water or carrying your own around in a BPA free water bottle. If you insist on carrying your own sports/water bottles, buy ones which are BPA free. It takes 10 liters of water to manufacture a 1 liter throwaway plastic water bottle and 200ml of oil goes into the construction of a 600ml throwaway plastic water bottle. In The United States, 1,500 disposable water bottles become refuse every second. This is why it is important to use sports/ water bottles which are BPA free. You help save the environment and safeguard yourselves from unwanted ailments.

Choose sports/water bottles with single, double walls or ones which are vacuum insulated. Look out for ones which have no linings, and if plastic is a component such as lids and caps, that they are completely BPA free. More and more sports/water bottle Companies have become more eco-friendly, and take extreme care to produce ones which are BPA free. Check the label before purchasing and make sure that your sports/water bottle is free of this contaminant. You may not feel the impact a year or even three from now, but ultimately, BPA contamination can lead to grievous harm. Discard used plastic bottles. Often, people tend to re-fill empty plastic bottles and use them over and over. There are even some who place hot beverages inside them. This must not be practiced as more often than not, BPA seepage occurs and will cause harm to the body system.

It is always better to be safe than sorry.

360 Paper Water Bottles

360 Paper Water Bottles

Have you ever felt a nagging of your conscience when you had a sip of water from your plastic water bottle or when you had a chance to see the dustbins at a scenic spot flooded with these? If your answer is yes! Read on and be delighted.

The environment that we share has been affected and we are the major culprits. In answer to the plastic water bottles, the paper water bottle emerges as an eco – product made of recycled material. They aim at decreasing the usage of these plastic bottles and an increased usage of these will lead to a cleaner environment. Americans throw 60 million plastic bottles on an average per day. Statistics claim only that 14% of them are recycled. So, the rest of it ends on the earth as litter. According to National Association for Pet Container Resources (NAPCOR), 2.7 million tons of plastic PET bottles hit the shelves in the U.S and four fifth of it went into landfills. In the name of cleanliness and purity, we have managed to increase the garbage.

A clear examination of the above implies that the organization ‘Brand Image’ has taken into account the issues of the environment and the bottling companies. Their solution is the ‘360 paper water bottle’ which is a sustainable, innovative and eco-friendly solution.

They have utilized sheet stocks made from bamboo, palm leaves and other plants. When these sheets are pressed into two halves, a highly degradable micro thin poly-lactic acid (PLA) film forms and this creates as a barrier and prevents spillage. The bottle comes with a plug to seal the bottle. When this is removed, the torn paper is tethered to act as a cap. They are die stamped together and therefore eliminating the usage of a six-pack carrier. Natural dyes add color to these bottles and also allow company graphics to be embossed upon. The paper board tag is a further space for marketing the brand. The eco-boards act as pallets and shipping containers.

The advantages of these products are:

Safe and user-friendly

Resealable cap for protecting the contents

6 packs made of recycled material

Ecoboard shipping containers

Natural dyes for a warm and colorful appeal

Companies that bottle water, fruit drinks, soft drinks and even beer will need to act upon. Their decisions and further actions will help eliminate a huge amount of plastic material from our planet. We need a win-win not just for the companies and the consumers but also Earth, our planet. The organizations must become responsible and accountable.

Brand Image is an international design agency aiming at revamping the innovation process through a responsibly designed product. Their product is fortified as a brand at all levels like strategy, usage and differentiation. They aim at delighting the manufacturer and the consumer in a responsible manner. They have challenged the usual norms in producing a plastic water bottle at all levels and have come up with a 360 degree solution, an extremely radical one at that.

Plastic Water Bottle – A Brief Introduction

Plastic Water Bottle – A Brief Introduction

Bottles come in many shapes and sizes, colors and dimensions. One of the most common ones found is the plastic water bottle. Made from plastic, it normally has a tapered neck, a wider body with an aperture at the top. Generally, the mouth of the bottle is sealed with a bottle cap made of plastic. These plastic bottles are characteristically utilized to house liquids such as water, soft drinks, ink, milk, cooking oil and various types of medicine.

The first known structure of natural plastic was formulated by none other than Leonardo Da Vinci. He fashioned plastic from glues derived from animals and plant life, and pooled with organic fibers. Upon aeration, the final result of this combination would be very similar to the plastic we have this day.

However, it was Alexander Parkes who initiated the original man-made usable plastic, nicknamed Parkesine at the International Exhibition, London in 1862. What would have been a promising start was dampened by the fact that producing plastic at the time was costly plus combustibility issues, the product became outdated.

Although plastic bottles were primarily utilized for commercial purposes in 1947, the production costs sky-rocketed. It was only in the 1960s that high-density Polyethylene was pioneered, and was speedily accepted by manufacturers due to its lightweight disposition and cheaper assembly costs. This greatly affected the food industry, as plastic bottles quickly replaced its glass predecessor.

Let us look at the more common types of plastic water bottles, their quality grades, conventions and restrictions. Plastic bottles are manufactured utilizing an array of techniques, and material selections depend upon relevance. High Density Polyethylene or HDPE, is by far, the most extensively employed resin for plastic bottles. This substance is popular because it’s cost-effective, shock-defiant and possesses a compatible moisture blockade. HDPE, naturally lucid and supple, is well-matched with an ample assortment of products as well as acids and caustics, but is not attuned with solvents. It also offers superior defense below sub-zero temperatures, but cannot be utilized with results packed at over 160F or those which are in need of an airtight seal.

Low Density Polyethylene or LDPE is alike in composition with HDPE. The only differences lie in its deeper lucidity, its more yielding nature and not as chemically resistant. However, LDPE bottles are more expensive than HDPE. Polyethylene Terephthalate, or more commonly referred to as polyester, is universally utilized for beverages which are carbonated and also as Water bottles. Polyester is the plastic of choice because it has excellent alcohol and vital oil obstruction properties, plus its durability against shock and tensile strength is undefeatable. Polypropylene or PP, has an elevated constancy when exposed to high temperatures, which is why it is ideal to house warm liquids such as syrups. PP has a superb chemical resistance and can take heat for up till 200F. It is unsuitable to house liquids of cold temperature.

Plastic water bottles, whether made from HDPE, LDPE or PP is generally safe and has passed FDA regulations. These water bottles are durable, easy to handle and safe for children..
