Pet Bottles : Safe Or Dangerous?

Pet Bottles : Safe Or Dangerous?

Polyethylene terephthalate or PET is a thermoplastic polymer resin that belongs to the polyester family and is mainly used in combination with glass fiber for the manufacture of synthetic fibers, liquid containers, thermoforming applications and engineering resins. It was in the 1970’s that PET bottles came to be rapidly manufactured using blow moulding techniques and thus it became an excellent material for beverage bottles. Some of the outstanding beneficial properties of PET include its lightweight, durability, strong material, extremely  good optical properties and sufficient gas barrier performance. PET bottles are made by employing a process called ‘injection stretch blow moulding’ which enhances  the properties of PET. Today, PET is used as a raw material for manufacturing bottles and containers for packaging a varied range of food products and consumer goods such as soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products etc.

PET bottles can be recycled so as to reuse the material with which they are manufactured and to lessen the amount of waste that goes to landfills. They are also recycled and reused for solar water disinfection in some of the developing nations.

However, environmentalists have raised serious concerns over the indiscriminate use of PET bottles. According to them, PET bottles have the potential to cause significant health hazards for users. Scientists and reserachers at the Goethe University in Frankfurt discovered that estrogenic compounds leach from the plastic in PET bottles into water. There is a strong probability thatcertain unidentified chemicals in these plastics have the extreme potential to interfere with estrogen and other reproductive hormones, causing disastrous health hazards.

Environmentalists and scientists recommend that PET bottles including single-use water, soda and juice bottles must not be reused. The Green Guide reports that such bottles could be safe only for one-time use and reuse should be strictly avoided. Studies reveal that they may leach DEHP(Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate)  another possible human carcinogen, into water which could create serious health risks. The Berkeley Ecology Center has come up with a recent discovery that the manufacture of PET bottles uses tremendous amounts of energy and resources and releases toxic pollutants into the atmosphere that ultimately contributes to global warming.

Safe and Natural Cures for Skin Care

Safe and Natural Cures for Skin Care

Herbal wraps are easy to make. Create your own, similar to the ones offered at the expensive spas, by using 1 cup corn oil, 1/2 cup grapefruit juice and 2 teaspoons of dried thyme. Combine the ingredients and work the mixture into the thigh, hip and butt areas. Cover the areas with a plastic wrap, locking in the heat from your body. To accelerate the results, lay a heating pad for several minutes over the desired areas.

Virgin coconut oil/butter makes for a good moisturizer by providing a protective layer that locks in natural moisture. Coconut oil solidifies at temperatures below 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the coconut butter in small lip balm or eye cream jars or any small sterilized jar. For a lip balm, use coconut butter on its own or add peppermint or spearmint oil. As an acne treatment, add a couple of drops of tea tree, lavender, or patchouli oil. For wrinkles, add rose, orange or patchouli oil. To treat eczema, add chamomile, geranium, or orange oil. To treat broken capillaries, add rose, palmarosa, or parsley oil. To treat cellulite, add grapefruit, tangerine, or orange oil. For stretch marks, add palmarosa or neroli oil. To treat burns, add geranium, patchouli or lavender oil.

Avocados make excellent face masks for dry skin. They boast 14 minerals as antioxidant vitamins E and A. To prepare a face mask, mash up avocado, add a touch of sweet almond oil and smooth the mixture over your face, keep it on for as long as possible to nourish and soften the skin.

Place thin slices of cucumber on your eyelids for 20 minutes. This stereotypical home remedy increases circulation and soothes the tired skin under your eyes.

Fenugreek has many traditional uses, including nourishing the skin, respiratory system, and the pancreas. It helps the body to expel mucus and toxins. Fenugreek dissolves fat and is high in nutrients.

This is due to the aggravation of vata dosha, which naturally increases with age. Thus aging is something that can be prevented to come to early but can’t be cured as such. It’s a natural ongoing process and beyond human limit to control it. Aging causes dryness and wrinkling of the skin. Factors like excessive thinking, stress, tension, over work, strain, irregular sleeping and eating habits and cold or dry foods enhance aging. Foods containing artificial flavors, colors, preservatives and chemicals also aggravate the Vata dosha and fasten aging.

Most people do not realize this but excess sugar is considered one of the main causes of premature aging. The more sugar we eat, the more sugar we have entering our bloodstream. Over time, this can result in a process known as glycation, which is when a glucose (sugar) molecule damages a protein molecule by sticking to it. The new molecules formed are called advanced glycation end-products, or AGEs. AGEs damage collagen in skin, cartilage, and ligaments and promote a loss of elasticity. Wrinkles form and skin begins to sag.

For a homemade facial toner, mix green tea, chamomile or ginseng tea (made with mineral water or distilled water) with lavender or lemon oil. Green tea is rich in antioxidants which fight free radicals that damage and age the skin. Green tea is said to diminish fine lines. Lavender oil is a good toner and lemon oil is a good rejuvenator and toner. Add Vitamin C crystals as a preservative and antioxidant. MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) is a natural source of organic sulfur good for the skin. Add MSM crystals to your toner or eat high sulfur foods such as kale or watercress.

Choosing a Safe Reusable Water Bottle For a Promotional Product

Choosing a Safe Reusable Water Bottle For a Promotional Product

For your customers’ health and the health of the environment, choosing a safe reusable water bottle for a promotional product is very important. Everyone knows that the best way to go green with water is to drink it from the tap in a glass. But, that’s not practical for people on the go. People on the go need something to put their water in.

There are many different types of water bottles on the market. There’s the regular plastic ones that you get from your grocery store or gas station. But, there are big problems with those. They are the worse kind you can choose to drink from because they are made of PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which leaks DEHP (Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate) after repeated use and is a probable carcinogen. These also can harbor bacteria in the cracks and crevices, which is not good for health either.

The plastic sports bottle is the next reusable water bottle, but is still not that safe. These are made out of polycarbonate, which leaks BPA, a synthetic hormone that can mimic estrogen and cause prostate cancer.

A better to help your customers drink their water on the go is to give them aluminum water bottles. Aluminum bottles are much safer, can be easily cleaned, and are reusable.

But, the best bet for your customers on the go are stainless steel water bottles. They do not leak, do not crack or break, and do not interact with whatever you are consuming. The water or beverage inside these water bottles also stays relatively cold. They are the safest bottles to drink from.

All in all, the safest reusable water bottles to use as promotional products are the aluminum water bottles and stainless steel water bottles. They are also the best way to go green, as they are reusable and never have to be recycled. If properly cleaned and maintained, they can last a lifetime.

So, let’s say you decide to go the greener route and you give away stainless steel water bottles. Of course, you will want your logo printed on the bottles so that your company is easily recognized. If your company is easily recognized, your advertising dollars are hard at work for you. By choosing the very best bottles for your customers’ health and the health of the environment, you are sending a clear message that you are a business owner that cares-and that says a lot about you. It shows that your not just in it for the profit. You are in it for the customer. And, that will bring in more customers than you can imagine.

Safe Filtration

Safe Filtration

Everyone loves a drink of cool water to drink on a hot day. The current consumption of bottled water has caused a problem for the planet. It has been estimated that bottled water companies make .2 billion dollars a year with little regulation, which means that ordinary tap water can be just as good as any given bottle of water. The bottles themselves are plastic and continue to pile up in our landfills, harming our planet.

If you want to do something good for the environment, invest in a good home purifier. If you buy reusable glass containers you can bottle your own beverages. Using slices of fresh fruit for flavoring you can make your own juices. You’ll save money and you’ll be drinking something that is better for your health. It is the most logical, convenient, and economical solution, for obtaining better quality water. Water filters offer many benefits over tap water and bottled water. Many events, like E. coli scares and lead poisonings, have created new levels of awareness about the need for home water filters. Home water filtration offers higher quality water than bottled water with the convenience of coming out of the tap. For less than 10 cents a gallon you can have great tasting, healthy, and chemical-free water. All at the touch of a button!

Unlike bottled water, home water filters are required to document the purity of the water they produce. In many states, it is unlawful to make uncertified claims for home water filters. This strict regulation gives consumers a means for accurately comparing and substantiating a water filter’s performance capabilities. Certain states, California being the strictest, require manufacturers to have all promotional, advertising, website and packaging materials, reviewed by the Department of Health for accuracy. The California Certification is one of the best ways to determine a product’s performance capabilities. Eco-friendly systems usually use a carbon filter and other natural filters to make the water clean. Systems that require complex chemicals are not as eco-friendly. The chemicals have to be disposed of in special ways, but most consumers simply throw them out, which means it goes into the landfill and can cause contamination to soils.

Water filtration systems are the way to go for a green lifestyle. They use fewer resources and are economical.

Envirocitizen.org is a comprehensive ecommerce website that combines robust commerce, content, and community.  We believe that we have created the most comprehensive site to date to make eco-friendly products, services, and information available to individuals who wish to live a green, more eco-friendly lifestyle.  Our site offers a very broad and diverse array of eco-friendly products as well as comprehensive, authoritative information and environmental education.  Additionally, users can enjoy the sense of community created by participating in our Forum.

Water Bottles: is your Bottle Safe for Drinking?

Water Bottles: is your Bottle Safe for Drinking?

On the bottom of my water bottle there is a number inside a triangle, what does it mean?

The number inside of the triangle is a plastic identification number representing what chemical was used to make the plastic. For example if you see a 1 that represents PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate) or a 7 represents Polycarbonate (which contains Bisphenol A), which are the two most commonly used chemicals in water bottles. This articles intent is to give a basic overview for #1 and #7 chemicals and is not inclusive by any means. I urge the reader to research each of these chemicals further.

Can I reuse my plastic water bottle?

Water bottles with the #1 (PETE) are for single use only! PETE leaches out into the solution within the second use. The more you reuse bottles made out of PETE the more of the chemical you are ingesting (Aquafina and Dasani are made out of PETE). Number 7 is rather stable in the beginning but with washing and continued use the pores of the plastic begin leaching polycarbonate and the more you wash and refill the more you are ingesting. I recommend not using bottles made with #7 (Nalgene is made with polycarbonate).

What is the health problem associated with chronic exposure to these chemicals?

PETE is thought to possibly be a carcinogen; there have been reported studies to support this claim. I am not yet sold on the exact condition it causes but drinking small amounts of chemicals cannot be good for anyone. Polycarbonate on the other hand is showing health concerns in a variety of ways. Bisphenol A (contained in Polycarbonate) was 1st introduced to the market in the 1930’s as an estrogen for pharmacological use. It is now used in our plastics and has been shown to disrupt the endocrine system, fetus development, cause reproductive abnormalities and has been shown to enhance the growth of human breast cancer cells. These are dis-ease states that everyone should be trying to prevent from occurring.

Are there any bottles that are safe?

Bottles made by SIGG are coated on the inside with resin that have been proven to be resistant to breakdown and do not leach harmful chemicals. These bottles are looked upon as the gold standard when it comes to reusable containers.

What is the Chiropractic connection?

Proper hydration is a part of the detoxifying, cooling and transportation process for every cell in the body. If the water you are consuming is contaminated with chemicals these process will be hindered and dysfunction will follow. Dysfunction in the body comes in the form of headaches, back pain, constipation or if in large enough amounts, even cancer.

Bottled Up and Ready to Go, Is Bottled Water Safe?

Bottled Up and Ready to Go, Is Bottled Water Safe?

In the past year, the bottled water industry has experienced a shake up with environmental groups and several U.S. cities taking initiatives to curb the consumption of bottled water. Among these cities are Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Salt Lake City, Santa Barbara, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan. These cities have also banned the use of plastic bottles at city-sponsored events, removed them from restaurant menus, and campaigned to drink tap water. However, the bottled water category remains resilient and is standing up to the controversy, as sales and consumption of bottled water have been reported to be on the rise. Studies have shown that seventy-five percent of consumers drink both tap and bottled water, and are not replacing municipal drinking water with bottled water, but instead choosing bottled water as an alternative to other beverages containing caffeine, sugar, or other artificial flavors and ingredients.

Many people have heard the talk of bottled water being unregulated. However, the FDA actually already regulates bottled water products and has been developing regulations covering identity and standards of quality, which determine the maximum levels of chemical, physical, microbial, and radiological contaminants that are allowed in bottled water. The FDA has also adopted many standards from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation of public drinking water. Both bottled drinking water and tap water share many of the same standards when it comes to the contaminants that are allowed in drinking water.

The enhanced water industry is continually growing as members continually pursue and tweak brands to shape this category. With players in the industry including Coca-Cola, Cadbury, and Pepsi, many different types of enhanced and flavored waters have entered into the market. There are many niche brands that have also entered the market as they add new flavor profiles and innovative products. Additionally, the market for bottled water that is tailored for children is catching on. The trend of water for kids consists of waters fortified with nutrients that help round out their diets. Parents seem to be looking for organic, healthier options when it comes to their children, so it is important for retailers to offer kids’ products that the primary purchaser, which is normally the female head of household, would consume, trust, and understand.

Environmental concerns are also raising red flags over the amount of plastic water bottles that are being properly recycled. A report form the Container Recycling Institute (CRI) stated that 96% of single-serving plastic water bottles do not get recycled because they are frequently consumed on the go. With the national recycling rate for all plastic water bottles being just 23.1 percent, bottled water is even lower with the CRI estimating that about four billion plastic bottles ending up in the waste stream.

In response, some companies are introducing new beverage bottles with less plastic included that will help to eliminate some waste from the environment. It seems as if the bottled water industry will continue to deliver new innovations and controversy for many years to come. Providing a variety of products that address a consumer’s stance on the above issues is important for retailers.

Mailing Fresh Cookies – How To Keep Them Fresh And Safe During Shipping

Mailing Fresh Cookies – How To Keep Them Fresh And Safe During Shipping

Cookies are a versatile gift consideration for any event. Below is a step-by-step process to getting your cookies there without losing freshness or taste!

Article:
A delightful gift for any reason is self baked cookies. Cookies are versatile and generally popular. You can delight a family member serving overseas, your grandparents, or your co-workers on the Christmas list. Still, in order to be really appreciated, the cookies must survive the travel to their recipient fresh and unbroken. Here, we give you a bit of advice on how to achieve just that.

First, you want to let your cookies cool to room temperature before packaging them. If the cookies are still warm, they will let out their moisture inside the container which can cause them to become soggy, or even moldy. However, you would do best not to wait more than 24 hours after they come out of the oven to send out your cookie gift. If you don’t want the recipient to have dry and stale cookies, don’t wait beyond that.

Now you have to wrap the cookies. The most popular materials used to wrap cookies are cellophane or waxed paper. Either material will suffice. In some instances your cookies have a long journey. In such cases, wrapping them individually may be a wise move, so they don’t stick together. In case you’re mailing your baked goods in a cookie tin or strong box, you can package the baked sweets in cupcake papers or coffee filters. Don’t mix different kinds of cookies. That way their varying moisture levels and flavors are maintained. If you are worried about your cookies drying out along the way, try placing a bit of bread or slice of apple in the package.

Next, you should place the cool cookies in an airtight container. A metal tin is a favorite for most. During the holiday season, most general or grocery stores sell specific tins for just this reason. However, every day you can buy tins suitable for cookies at DYI stores and general stores. Let’s not forget glass jars, mason jars, plastic tubs, even disposable plastic containers to buy in stores.  General stores offer re-usable plastic containers for pretty low prices. Of course, the most basic but least frilly option is the plastic bag. Bags do allow for flexibility and decent protection from leaks, but not strength, so you would want to put the bag in a stronger receptacle. Any form of container absolutely must be airtight. Through this we keep moisture, contamination, and more undesirable things away from your home baked cookies, and retain the flavor of your gift.

Finally, place your cookies in the shipping box. Boxes are plentiful. Buy them, utilize an old one, or scrounge one at your area grocery or general store. Protect the cookies on all sides. This can be done in many ways: bubble wrap, foam peanuts, old cardboard strips, and newspaper or magazine pages. Anything you can scrunch together is fair game for padding. Some rarely considered thoughts which are useful are popcorn or marshmallows and gum. These cushioning aides can then be enjoyed by the grandkids as well! Once your home made sweets are fully packaged and addressed, write ‘Fragile’ on the box and mail them out. You want to send them quickly enough that they are not in shipping for over three or four days. Don’t ship over a Sunday. You don’t want your fresh cookies to sit in a shipping office. The shipping agent usually will give you an estimated arrival date to help with your planning.

Don’t forget, as long as your cookies are cooled before they’re sealed, they will likely arrive in good condition. Do not put more effort into mailing your cookies than you did creating them. Whoever gets them will be overjoyed with the sweets no matter what!

Bottled Or Tap Water – Are They Safe?

Bottled Or Tap Water – Are They Safe?

You have to drink something, but when it comes to choosing bottled water or tap water, it can be a tough choice, unless you have a point-of-use or home purifier.  So, actually, you have three choices.  Home purification is the best of the three.  Here are the reasons why.

Environmental Concerns About Water Safety

Plastic bottles are a major source of pollution.  They are not biodegradable.  Scientists can only estimate at how long it would take for a bottle to finally degrade.  They expect it would take thousands of years.

Petroleum or petrochemicals are used in the production of the bottles.  Gasoline and diesel fuels are used to transport them.  Environmental groups estimate that drinking a 16 ounce bottle is equivalent to pouring about 5 ounces of crude oil on the ground.

During the production of the bottles, a great deal of freshwater is wasted.  If you drink a 16 ounce bottle, it is equivalent to throwing away 48 ounces of freshwater.  So, bottling companies waste two of our precious natural resources.

Health Concerns over Water Quality

When freshwater is packaged in bottles and shipped to the stores, some of those chemicals seep into the liquid.  The danger depends on the type chemical.  They could cause an increased cancer risk, birth defects or hormonal imbalances.

Either bottled water or tap water can contain hazardous chemicals.  In many cases, the bottling companies use the local supply as their source.  Basically, they are bottling your own water and reselling it to you, but that’s more of an economic concern.

Either one can contain cysts, which are a cause of waterborne illnesses that can be deadly to at-risk individuals.  The EPA advises those that are at-risk to install a purifier certified to filter down to at least one micron.  They say that it is not wise to trust the bottles or your faucet.

Economics or Safety?

When it comes to the cost of bottled water or tap water, you are probably already paying for one of them.  It really doesn’t make sense to pay for the other.  The Environmental Working Group estimates that a family of four can save over 00 per year if they stopped buying bottled beverages and installed a purifier on their kitchen sink.

The group feels that a purifier is necessary in most, if not all,  of the homes in the United States, because of chemicals like chlorine, perchlorate and THMs.

Doesn’t the Bottling Companies Purify The Water?

If you are trying to choose bottled water or tap water, you are probably concerned about purity.  You might wonder if the purification systems used by a bottling company are better than what you could do at home.

The truth is that some companies do nothing to purify.  They bottle directly from a faucet.

Those facilities that do purify use reverse osmosis, which will not remove the chemicals that cause health problems.  In fact, the purification method used by one of the major companies actually caused the formation of cancerous chemicals, which were not present in the original supply.

So, don’t drink bottled water or tap water.  Install a purifier and make your own, at home.  It’s cheaper, safer and more environmentally friendly.
