PureCircle announces ambitious 2020 sustainability goals

PureCircle, a leading producer and marketer of high puC - daily - PureCircle_logo.jpegrity stevia products, announced today that it has expanded its Sustainability program and set an ambitious 2020 goal to reduce carbon, water, waste and energy use across its supply chain from farm to sweetener.

These goals mark a significant commitment to making a positive impact on the food and beverage industry’s environmental footprint and helping to tackle the global obesity challenge. PureCircle’s efforts will enable a cumulative reduction of the food & beverage industries’:

       • Carbon emissions by one million metric tons by 2020
       • Water consumption by two trillion liters by 2020
       • Calories in global diets by 13 trillion by 2020


When setting these ambitious commitments, PureCircle drew from the industry leading work it has undertaken to measure its carbon and water footprint. PureCircle was the first in the stevia industry to measure and publish results of the carbon and water footprint from farm to sweetener.


In Fiscal 2012, it completed its second carbon footprint, which together with the 2011 study formed the basis for the 2020 goals. These goals show that PureCircle stevia has a significantly lower environmental footprint than other natural mainstream sweeteners (high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), beet and cane sugar) based on publically available benchmarks.


Building on the progress the company has already made to reduce its carbon emissions and water use, the 2020 goals layout PureCircle’s commitments to have zero untreated waste to landfill and support 100,000 farmers by 2020. PureCircle‘s own vertically integrated supply chain, allows for innovation and traceability from farm to final stevia ingredient.

When one hears the word “honey”, what immediately comes to mind is that dreamy golden syrup dripping out of honeycombs. Honey is a natural product created by honeybees through a process called regurgitation using the nectar it gathered from the flowers. It is then stored in several honeycomb cells, allowing excess water to naturally evaporate thereby giving the syrup its distinctive sweet taste that a lot of people really love. Honey has been around for a long time now. Ancient artifacts show that the use of honey not only as a sweetener but also as a medicinal salves dates back to the time of ancient Egyptians. These relics show pictures of bee keepers blowing smoke into hives as they drive out the bees so that honey can be collected from the honeycombs. Once it is extracted, it is then strained and put into earthen jars and sealed for future use. Nowadays, the process of honey extraction and storage is still basically the same in principle, albeit, with improved efficiency as a result of new technologies. After honey is collected from the hive, it is then stored in properly sealed containers. These containers vary in size and types, from plastic to glass containers, most with tight screw-on covers on them. Over the years, these containers began to take on some various shapes to allow people to easily identify which jar contains honey. One of the most popular of these containers is the bear honey bottle. It is shaped like a friendly bear with an almost conical hat on top of its head. At the tip of this hat is a nozzle on which honey can flow out. It also has a small cover that can be snapped or screwed into place to again seal the honey in after getting an adequate amount. This shapely bee honey jar is very effective in sealing the honey in and also looks positively adorable that you will feel yourself smiling every time you lay your eyes on it. This lovely honey container also makes it easy for you the get just the right amount of honey that you need, minimizing the possibility of wasted residue which is always present in wide mouthed jars. The bear honey bottle actually is an appropriate container for honey to be stored in because it is a well known fact that bears like honey. What package is more fitting than a container shaped like a bear which is full of honey? Overtime, this container became so popular that it achieved icon status. So the next time you see a charming bear-shaped jar in store shelves with a thick syrupy liquid in it, you can be sure that it contains honey.
