Bottled Water vs. Alkaline Water: How Much Are You Paying?

Bottled Water vs. Alkaline Water: How Much Are You Paying?

How much money would you be willing to spend for the convenience of a bottle of water that does not necessarily contains any minerals that could benefit your body? How much would you be willing to risk your health to continue drinking bottled water? The cost of bottled water might not seem like much when you look at it on a daily basis, but what about the cost to your health? What about the dent in your wallet paying for bottled water makes over time?

We’re encouraged to drink 8 cups of water everyday at 8 ounces per cup. But these days, medical practitioners have increased that number to around 9 cups per day for women and 13 cups per day for men. Roughly, we’re advised to consume ½  a gallon of water every day. These numbers vary with age, level of activity, gender and environment but an average person needs to consume about 10 gallons of water per week.

Now, let’s compare the cost of bottled water versus alkaline water. Generally bottled water cost 2 dollars each, and a consumer will spend 130 to 780 dollars on bottled water per year, depending on whether it is delivered or if the consumer hauls the water himself. 130 dollars doesn’t seem that bad for an entire year’s worth of water considering that it’s convenient and clean, but what about over a longer period of time, like 40 years?

Over 40 years, the consumer will spend between 5,200 and 31,200 dollars on bottled water. Think about what you could buy with 5,200 dollars, or 31,200 dollars! You could buy a car just by saving the money you spent  on bottled water over 40 years.

So, how exactly do we save our money from spending unnecessarily on bottled water? Well, we can buy water filter to filter water from the tap so that we can get alkaline water instead. Generally, the price for filtered water can vary, depending on the type of filtered water system that you use.

You could spend 93 dollars on a plastic faucet mount, 150 on a pour-through pitcher, 330 on an alkaline system, 406 on Distillation, or 600 on a mid-range Reverse Osmosis system. It seems like a lot when you hit beyond 150 dollars, but over a long period of time, the initial cost is absolutely worth it.

330 dollars spent on an alkaline system doesn’t seem like much when you compare it to the cost of the system over 40 years at only 1,730 dollars. That means you spend only 1,400 dollars over 39 years on your water supply. That’s more than 3,000 dollars less than the cheapest bottled water you can find in the market.

Overall, alkaline water systems is not cheaper than bottled water but they are healthier  too as alkaline water takes out impurities like chlorine and many other harmful substance from the water, leaving you with good tasting water that benefits your health.

Safe Filtration

Safe Filtration

Everyone loves a drink of cool water to drink on a hot day. The current consumption of bottled water has caused a problem for the planet. It has been estimated that bottled water companies make .2 billion dollars a year with little regulation, which means that ordinary tap water can be just as good as any given bottle of water. The bottles themselves are plastic and continue to pile up in our landfills, harming our planet.

If you want to do something good for the environment, invest in a good home purifier. If you buy reusable glass containers you can bottle your own beverages. Using slices of fresh fruit for flavoring you can make your own juices. You’ll save money and you’ll be drinking something that is better for your health. It is the most logical, convenient, and economical solution, for obtaining better quality water. Water filters offer many benefits over tap water and bottled water. Many events, like E. coli scares and lead poisonings, have created new levels of awareness about the need for home water filters. Home water filtration offers higher quality water than bottled water with the convenience of coming out of the tap. For less than 10 cents a gallon you can have great tasting, healthy, and chemical-free water. All at the touch of a button!

Unlike bottled water, home water filters are required to document the purity of the water they produce. In many states, it is unlawful to make uncertified claims for home water filters. This strict regulation gives consumers a means for accurately comparing and substantiating a water filter’s performance capabilities. Certain states, California being the strictest, require manufacturers to have all promotional, advertising, website and packaging materials, reviewed by the Department of Health for accuracy. The California Certification is one of the best ways to determine a product’s performance capabilities. Eco-friendly systems usually use a carbon filter and other natural filters to make the water clean. Systems that require complex chemicals are not as eco-friendly. The chemicals have to be disposed of in special ways, but most consumers simply throw them out, which means it goes into the landfill and can cause contamination to soils.

Water filtration systems are the way to go for a green lifestyle. They use fewer resources and are economical.

water bottle with filter

water bottle with filter

There are many types of water bottles with filters around these days.  Some are meant to actually aid people in areas that do not have abundant sources of clean drinking water.  These types of water bottles with filters are called The Lifesaver bottle.  This bottle’s filter can be interchangeable and can purify between 4,000 and 6,000 liters. It filters out objects such as viruses, bacteria and heavy metal.   This type of water bottle with a carbon filter does not require chemicals to clean the water.   The process of cleaning the water with this bottle only takes 20 seconds, and filters 1.5 pints of water in that time.

The Lifesaver bottle does have its’ limits, and will no longer clean water once this limit has been reached.  The Lifesaver bottle has also been used by the military.  A much larger of the Lifesaver bottle, which is called the Lifesaver Jerrycan, uses the same filtering process. This can is able to filter 10,000 to 20,000 liters of water.  One jerrycan filter is able to provide plenty of water for a family of four for a three year span.  In 2007, the LifeSaver bottle was tested and was found to completely filter out bacteria and viruses.  This is a great scientific achievement that will allow people in disaster areas, access to clean water, which is of upmost importance. You can also use a water bottle with a filter to save money and reduce waste.  You can save money by not buying expensive bottled water and  in the meantime, reduce plastic bottle waste.  Most of these systems are not as complex as the Lifesaver bottle.

Stop Drinking Bottled Water… Now

Stop Drinking Bottled Water… Now

Americans now spend more than fifteen billion a year on bottled water.

It takes about 50 million barrels of oil a year to make the 28 billion plastic bottles that contain this water. This is enough oil to fuel about 20% of the cars in the United States annually. Bizarrely it takes three times more water to produce the bottle, than the amount of water the bottle actually holds.

Eighty percent of plastic water bottles end up in landfills and are not recycled. Most plastic bottles will never biodegrade.

Bottled water costs more per gallon than gasoline.

Bottled water is typically 1000 times more expensive than tap water.

In almost every scientific comparison test the quality of bottled water is no better than tap water.

Forty percent of the bottled water sold in the United States is actually tap water.

If your tap water doesn’t taste right it is probably your plumbing, and a water filter, which takes out containments, but leaves the healthy minerals in water should solve the problem. (By the way distilled water is free of containments, but lacks the minerals your body needs from water.)
